But wait... is Shelob actually a huge spider, or just a being which has taken on the form of a huge spider?
"Eater of Light" suggest there’s more to her than just a big, ugly arachnid, and Ungoliant took spider form, but wasn’t actually naturally a spider.
Also, as for all evil things being virtually wiped out in the Fourth age, I’d point out that Tolkien actually began work on a sequel to LotR, with a new Dark Lord rising; one of Sauron’s buddies, or something like that. The first one or two chapters or so (which is all that he wrote) are in one of the History of Middle-Earth books, but I don’t remember which one. Anyone else know what I’m talking about, and can point out which it is? |

Shelob is just in spider form methinks but is really something way more sinister. And no I have not heard of that sequel that Tolkein was going to write. If only he did!  |
