An element of networking experience plus some fiddling around got me thinking. Most likely, those who cannot host a game on SDA probably can! And I have the remedy (I think).
This post is mostly for anyone who cannot host an SDA Game. Follow these simple steps thoroughly, and be sure to do each one exactly:
1. Start SDA. Start the usual process of hosting a game. The problem is not that you cannot host, but that people on the other end can’t join. There’s a big difference. All should be going just as normal.
2. Look at the top left of the screen, on the title bar of the SDA Window. It will say something like this: “SDA by Paulo Serra – IP: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, where the x’s are the IP address. Take particular note of this! This is where You can figure out how to make your machine able to receive a connection from someone else. If the first characters of the IP Address are 192.168, which the most likely are, then that is the problem with your ability to host a game. A little tech lingo: a computer behind a router has 2 IP addresses. One is the internet or public IP address, and the other is the private or network IP address. The reason that you cannot host a game is that you are giving your “joining buddy” the network address instead of the Internet address. You need to obtain your internet address so that the poor guy on the other end can join your game. How? On to step 3…
3. Finding your Internet address is easy. It cannot be found on your end of the computer, because even bringing up the command prompt and typing “ipconfig” will only reveal the 192.168 address again. Not good. But, an external source, such as a web site will leak this valuable information to you. Go to this site:
ip-address.com
4. Copy and give that IP address to the person you want to join. Voila! It should work! If not, then either you did not follow these steps correctly (they’re really straight forward) or you have a firewall interference. Feel free to ask any questions. |

| One more tip: If both players run Hamachi, they can avoid any firewall/ports issues. Either can host. |

Update: my previous post has a slight inaccuracy in it...even though you follow all the steps above, one or two people may still have a problem hosting on SDA. Should this be the case...download Hamachi, as Kralik suggested.
How to use Hamachi: Download it. It’s only approx. 1 megabyte in size, which isn’t too bad. Set up the program, making sure you have admin rights to install. Once that’s done, if you’re connected to the web, initialize hamachi. It should show an IP address in the title bar of its window. Use that address to host your SDA game. Your opponent should be able to join.
Any questions, ask Kralik how to use it should problems come up. |
