Hey Conor,
Just had a few questions that I have wondered about for a while.
First, how do you sort and keep track of all your singles?
Do you use binders or boxes or something else? And do you have pictures of your card storage that you could show us?
How many booster boxes do you normally open to make sure you have enough singles?
When did you start CobraCards and why?
What is the biggest order you have ever had?
Finally, are you married and do you have kids?
Just curious. |

That’s a lot of questions!

Well, we just open the boxes, stack up the cards, and sort them alphabetically (Magic: The Gathering), or by culture (LOTR TCG). The quantities of each card are then entered into a spreadsheet, and the spreadsheet is run through a program which updates the inventory database. From there, the website software takes care of things by automatically updating the numbers as people place their orders.

The cards are put in soft sleeves and then stored in 5000-count boxes (the big ones with five long rows).

Nope, sorry... I’ll see what I can do though.
bobtheorc wrote: How many booster boxes do you normally open to make sure you have enough singles?
Depends on the situation, but it’s just math really. If I want to add 8 of each Fellowship of the Ring rare, that’s 8 * 121 = 968 packs, or about 27 boxes.
(That’s a high-end example -- obviously smaller sets take fewer boxes to restock.)

Cobra Cards got started in early May, 2004. I had a huge LOTR TCG collection that I wasn’t using much, so I set up a simple website to sell most of the cards. I was actually enjoying it quite a bit (games + entrepreneurship + web design, always very interesting to me), so I just kept it going, invested in a more complete inventory, spent a summer setting up a more professional website, and so on...
bobtheorc wrote: What is the biggest order you have ever had?
Off the top of my head, I think the largest order was just shy of $600.
bobtheorc wrote: Finally, are you married and do you have kids?
No and no. Ask again in a year or so.
bobtheorc wrote: Why can I not find the Card Text Project?
I believe I’ve worked out a better, faster way to set up a database with all that information -- so in the meantime, I’ve removed the link so people won’t be spending time on something that might not be necessary. Stay tuned for more on this!
bobtheorc wrote: Also how come I cannot put culture symbols in my profile or in polls?
Currently the code only looks for those symbols in the actual post text -- that is a good suggestion though. PM me a reminder if you’d like, and I’ll add it to the list of code that needs updating. |
