When a deck was built for a certain format but then becomes illegal for that format, what should be done?

For example, take this LOTR TCG deck. It was built for Standard format back in 2005; but now that Tower Block has rotated out and Demoralized is X-listed, it would be considered Expanded format. If Demoralized is added to the Expanded X-list (or R-list) at some later date, it would then be considered Open format.

Should decks like this one be moved around as format guidelines change? Or, should they be left in their original location? Both options have their advantages and drawbacks... Ultimately I’d prefer to do whatever our player community finds more useful, so I’m opening the question up to you guys. Cool

All opinions and comments are welcome.

Even though it would be a bit of trouble for you or our mods, I think it would be much easier for someone browsing the deck clinic to find what they want if you moved the decks into their proper formats as certain cards become rotated, or X-listed. Thats just what I think though.

For example: travel back a couple years when Ravager Affinity was dominating type 2. Hypothetically, there is an affinity thread in the deck clinic. Ravinca debuts and mirrodin block rotates out. I think in this case you should have a forum hidden atthe bottom of this type 2 thread named "Retired Type 2 Archive" or something along those lines. That way when a deck completely rotates out of cycle, you can simply put it into an archive so it’s still accessible, but out of the way.

So you’re implying that they should be taken out of the "updated" decks. Wouldn’t it be easier if they were moved to the approppriate formats, rather than just being hidden?

No, I dont think they should at all. If for some odd chance the deck is viable and played in future formats after it’s rotation, than a new thread can be started with a deck on par with the format. A link can be used in the thread’s opening post, to show the retired type 2 version. But there is no point in having an old type 2 deck put in to a extended forum... why not put it in legacy? it’s legal.... why not put it in vintage? it’s legal. The deck is an old type 2 deck, not a deck in any other formats and it should be avialable for refrence only.

But physcosick has a fine point. You see, what he means is this: I make a deck fos standard play. It has a fairly limited card poll to choose from (specially when you’re talking about MTG). If it then becomes Expanded (or Extended, for MTG players), my card Poll becomes much, much wider, andthat deck might actually be WEAK considering that format. So, if the new format for the deck clinic is supposed to keep decks closely organized so that players can check on them for ideas on what to play in any given format (and mind you, we’re talking about players actually BUILDING those decks for TOURNAMENTS, rather than just for fun, casual play), physcosick’s idea DO make decks CURRENTLY "more" available at the Clinic stronger. For instance, a rotated standard deck in MTG is not even CLOSE to good in Extended or Legacy, when you have 2-8 times the number of cards to choose from. So, a retired Standard deck, as Cobra puts it, should be a Retired Standard deck, and NOT an Extended deck, or players will get crushed with them, and they’ll be pretty lousy. Just imagine a Standard LotR deck becoming Expanded. Anyone. How many options are now open to it? If you want, them tweak it, and post a NEW decklist in the Expanded Area. Supposing you don’t, and A LOT of time elapses. Can you imagine a Standard deck playing in Open? How on Earth would they survive? I’m not sure I expressed myself with enough clarity, but, do you see what I mean? I agree that mods SHOULD have a bit of extra work ( Wink ) by keeping close watch to the posted decks, replying to a deck if a card couldn’t be part of it, or moving decks posted in the wrong thread, and "retiring" decks as they rotate out of format.
