Should avatar and signature privileges become part of the new forum shop?
This is exactly the type of thing that a "money" system is often used for, but I’m not sure that I want to take existing features away and make people buy them back. They would be cheap items though, probably 5 GP each.

I really don’t think those should be made shop items, simply because they would make everyone have 5 big posts to get an avvie or a siggy. Now, what I would support is being able to pay GP for, say, an animated avvie, from an existing gallery. Or paying for a sig image.
But not something like paying to be able to have a siggy/avvie. |

Good ideas, thanks!
5 GP really isn’t that much -- your reply to my question was 335 characters with out even trying! And I really like the idea of removing distractions for new users, and encouraging them to dive right in and post rather than spending time setting up the perfect sig and avatar. Might sound silly, but I’ve observed it many times...
So, I’ve just made avatars and signatures into shop items that must be purchased. BUT, I’ve also gifted existing users with 10 GP, so you can get them back with a few clicks of the mouse. (This also has the advantage of familiarizing people with the new shop... ) |

Another good way of handling Forum Money would be awarding some amount of it to the winner and runner up of the Strategy Article Contest, and maybe some even smaller amount to, say, every Article rated 3 stars or better each month. Also, instead of awarding GP for posts over 500 characters, you could do it like this: replies to deck clinic/strategy articles could be awarded 1 gp for each 500 characters. Open discussion posts could be awarded gp for each 500 characters as well. Posts in the gameplay questions area could be worth, let’s say, 1 gp for every reply (questions shouldn’t be awarded) containing useful information.
Posts at the Member’s Lounge/Feedback Forum/DC should be awarded 1 gp for each 700 or so characters, or no gp at all, in my opinion. But DC’s COULD host some "contests", maybe weekly, awarding small amounts of gp for the first 3 places or so. Riddle Game shouldn’t award gp at all.
Last, I think that every Article submited or every Deck submited to the Clinic should be awarded a small amount of gp, but more than 1. Maybe, on the main topics (meaning, the deck or the article themselves), 1 gp should be awarded for each 500 characters, so this would benefit those of us who discuss strategy, post card-by-card explanations and take the time to run match-ups.
Now, what should the gp be used for? I’m not quite sure, but I’m pretty sure it SHOULDN’T be used for store credit, as this would encourage spamming. I think the Strategy Article contest is enough on those grounds.
Oh, and btw, you COULD add some privileges with pre-requisites. For instance, buying a bigger Avatar or an animated one would require you to first purchase the Avatar item, and so on, maybe allowing you to follow two or more "paths" while upgrading your item (like buying animated avatar, bigger animated avatar and so on; or buying bigger avatar space, even bigger avatar space, being able to upload ANY photo as your avatar - yes, I think this should be a privilege as well, we should be limited to the avatars of the site ’till we pile up some gp - and so on). On that grounds, havin a small photo in you signature, like tOO uses, should also be an "evolution" if the Signature Privilege. Heck, even using smiles could be a privilege, which we could by in "packages". For instance, the first one would be regular smiles. The next one, the animated ones. Then, in equal levels, we would have Twilight Simbols and Colorless Mana Symbols (yes, I think you should add those, if it’s not a lot of trouble). And, last, we’dhave the "final levels" of those ones, which would be, respectively, Culture Symbols and Colored Mana Symbols.
PS: Not pretty sure this post belongs here, but since I thought of all this after reading Pipeweed’s post, I simply submited it as a reply, feel free to move it somewhere else. |

| interesting idea. I don’t see the point. seems like more of a waste of time. I can see spamming in the future. for some reason people find it a life goal to get as much of this "fake" money as possible. I’ve seen it lots... |

Spammers really are amazing creatures. You can learn all there is to know about their ways in a month. And yet, after a hundred years, they can still surprise you. |
