Under the current rules, each person can win only one prize per contest, no matter how many different articles that person submits. For example, last month macheteman submitted two articles which ranked 1st and 5th; he was awarded $50 credit for 1st place, and his 5th-ranked article essentially didn’t count.
I have considered the possibility (which has also been suggested by several authors) of allowing the same person to win multiple prizes for multiple articles. Under this rule, macheteman would have taken 1st and 5th, for a total of $55 credit.
Such a rule change might encourage good strategy writers to submit even more articles, which is certainly a good thing.
On the other hand, more articles wouldn’t necessarily mean more actual content -- rather than producing one "masterpiece" each month (for example, Felipe’s encylopedic article on LOTR TCG’s Open Format), there would be some incentive to work on several smaller articles (for example, Takeo’s multiple WoW TCG submissions last month).
Additionally, that rule change might discourage some players from trying their hand at the contests, since all five prize slots could easily be filled by just a few of our most experienced writers. Using last month’s LOTR contest as an example again, the 5th-place winners (legoles3333 and Pipeweed) would have been excluded from the prizes entirely.
______________
I’d like to get the community’s opinions on this matter. I’d particularly like to hear from users who have written, or are considering writing, for the contests -- would the proposed rule change be good or bad from your own perspective? Would it be likely to affect the type / number / length / etc. of your articles?
If you have an interest in this, please cast a vote and post a brief message explaining your opinion. (Or, feel free to PM me if you’d prefer to share your opinion in private.)
Cheers,

Yay, I got mentioned!
Well, I think if a person takes the time and writes 2 great articles, he/she should be rewarded it. Not because I am almost the only one writing in the WoW forum, and therefor likely to win more prizes, but because you are helping Cobracards getting their forum active and more articles to read!
I understand if those capable of reaching 5th place want only one prize pr person, since then they get $5, but if an article with 4.6 (ex) doesnt get a prize because the writer already have gotten a prize before, then a 4.2 article gets 5th, thats wrong..

I like the way that it works right now. That way an experienced article writer can’t take all the $$$ for himself.
I mean, I might profit from a decision to allow people to win multiple prizes, but I think that it’s better for the community to have more winners.

I think that there should be some system as there currently is now, with one prize, but that there should be some bonus to writing a second article. Don’t know what, but maybe an idea. Because we want experienced writers to write lots of articles. But we don’t want to exclude anyone. For example, F_M could write 5 articles and win $105 store credit (as if he would get anything but first in each article). While that is good, its also discouraging for younger players.
So maybe like a bonus couple dollars or booster pack for a second article or something...
But as is, the one prize per person is good. Leave it there. |

I echo AC and Nb.
The main purpose as far as I can see in having store credit be offered for winning articles is so that people who just "drop in" on CC can have a chance to win a couple bucks, which in turn encourages them and strengthen the CC Community. And a first-time article writer would be discouraged to write articles if they knew that there was a good chance only a few veteran article writers would get Credit.
That is one reason I was/am so excited about the current prize structure, if you submit an article there is a good chance of at least getting a little bit of store cred, thus encouraging a diverse group of articles every month.
Leave good (or IMHO, GREAT )enough alone.
Just look at the amount of LOTR TCG articles, which has skyrocketed and the wide variety of people submitting them.
wait I just though of something..
NEW IDEA
what if the Wow forum, which could use some growth, had a rule that an article writer could win multiple prizes? Maybe the same for MTG.
But leave the LOTR TCG article section under the "one winning article only" since it doesn’t need quite as much encouragement. |

Although I’m not actually involved in them (yet), I think just one prize would work best.
Although...
If, for whatever reason, there aren’t 5 different authors, I could see having the 2nd, then 3rd, and so on be ranked and awarded...
Alternatively, I could see it be limited to one price per person, but you get a bonus for each article that beat #5 (possibly based on which they would beat)...
As an example, the authors are busy and:
Takeo writes 4.8, 4.6, 4.6, 3.8, 3.2
Legoles writes 4.4, 4.4, 4.4, 3.9, 3.8
AC writes 4.9, 4.7, 4.5, 4.3, 4.1
AP writes 4.7, 4.4, 4.1, 3.8, 3.5
and I write 4.2, 4.2, 3.6, 3.6, 3.0
Now, with the highest five: AC gets 1st (4.9), Takeo gets 2nd (4.8), AP gets 3rd (4.7), AC gets 4th (4.7), Takeo gets 5th (4.6)
Okay, but only 3 people get a prize
With a limit of one per winner: AC gets 1st (4.9), Takeo gets 2nd (4.8), AP gets 3rd (4.7), legoles gets 4th (4.4), and I get 5th (4.2)
Again, okay, but Takeo wrote 2 other articles with a better rating than mine (in fact, better than legoles’). Legoles wrote 2 other with a better rating than mine. AC wrote 3 others better than mine (2 better than legoles). AP wrote one better than mine). So, there were 8 articles that were better than articles that won a prize.
We’ll say it’s $1 per article it would beat (as an example) - In that case AC wins $55 (50, +2 for each article better than 2 winning articles, +1 for an article better than a single article). Takeo wins $29, AP wins $16, legoles wins $12, and I win $5. Coming out to a total of $117 for 5 people with 5 articles.
I mean, I’m sure you could work out a way to get it to work within the $100, and there is a possibility that the 4th place article’s writer could win more than the 1st place this way, but they would have to write over 40 articles that are better than the 5th place article (over 5 better to win more than the 3rd)
(and NBarden, I was writing as you posted...) |
Our time here is ending...
What did you want to see before the end?

| I vote for leaving the system as it is. That would prevent article-spamming, AND discouragement of new writers. If you have another great article this month, keep it until next month. We need quality, not quantity. |

I echo corvus. If you have a great article, leave if for the next month, work on it, evolve it, etc...
If you want to post a smaller article, or a side article for fun, then you won’t mind it not competing, since you already wrote a better one. Not being able to win prixes for more than one article is not discouraging to the authors, as far as I’m concerned, and if I had a little bit more free time I’d submit more articles than just 1-2 per month. Also, the only busy enough forum to implement this is LotR, otherwise, people would just spam-cram the other article contests for the prizes with not-so-good articles, it already happens every now and then (I remember one Naruto article that was just one paragraph...). However, I think the GRADING system should have alterations. Either by default, or buying it at the Forum Shops, members SHOULD be allowed to give AT LEAST X.5 votes (not necessarily X.6, X.7, etc), to better reflect the work of the authors. I’ve seen the grading system being unfair more than once before, because of this. |
