So here’s the deal:
last night me and my girlfriend started getting into an arguement about an "issue". A couple of months ago I discovered she smoked ciggerates. Now, she didn’t smoke A LOT but every now and then, perhaps a few sticks a month. But regardless, the way I see it, it’s a slippery slope. Now coming from my family, where a few of my sisters and their husbands smoke, I am truelly disgusted by it. I see the effects that it has on other people, especially later on in life. That said, I made a personall promise to myself that I would never go out with a girl who smoked, it is repulsive. So because of the situations, she told me she would try to stop and she was until about a month ago when she told me she started smoking again. IN which case, we got in a bigger fight and she promised me she never would again.
Last night, she was talking to me about her not smoking and me drinking. Her opinion on drinking seems to change constantly, it’s annoying. One day she’ll say that she won’t want to, one day she’ll say that she will drink cause she doesn’t want to be the old woman who is the straight edge loser, an other day she’ll try to get me to not drink. So she was saying how it was hypocritical of me to try to make her stop smoking yet for me to go and drink with my friends. According to her, they are both pretty much the same thing, "they are both drugs". So I told her I was going to start snorting heroine because it’s the same thing.
So we got in an arguement again and I’m avoiding her now. We have a problem here. The fact is she comes from a family where her dad is an alcholic. So she has a very screwed up view of alcholol. So she doesnt want me to drink because of some obvious reasons; however, none of them truelly apply to me. The fact is I am not an alcholic, I drink with friends, and when I do, I’m a cool drunk not angry and I am not a threat to myself or anyone around me. In fact, I’m prolly less likely to get in fight while drunk then I would be if I was sober. So we have a serious problem here. She doesn’t want me to drink because of her father. I don’t want to be with a smoker but I also don’t want to be with someone who is going to be upset or angry at me everytime I drink on the weekends with my friends. My mother gets mad at my dad everytime he opens up a beer, I’m not trying to be in a relationship with someone like my mom, you know? So we have a problem here... however, this thread is not about my momentary rocky relationship...
So how do you guys feel on the issue of smoking vs drinking? What are your experiences or opinions on the issue? Do you smoke? Drink? How often?
etc, etc
PS: I’m not as think as you drunk I am |

| Drinking, any time, any day. Socially, I mean. As an addiction, it’s better to kill yourself than to get drunk and possibly hurt and/or kill others. |

Yet smoking doesn’t hurt people via second hand smoke? What about those people who are allergic to the smoke? Smoking doesn;t hurt them?
And the idea of drinking causing harm to others is purely a very dependent thing. It’s very dependent on exactly who it is and the situations they are in. More people cause harm to themselves via smoking then people die of alcholol related incidents.
Not to mention, or atleast in my case, we’re also talking about social drinking. Something that is scientifaclly proven to actually increase your health. |

Secondhand smoke only takes effect if you’re constantly exposed to it. And compared to the effects of drinking...

I guess the definition of "drinking" is what this boils down to. Because alcoholism not only causes physical harm to you and those around you, but also psychological harm, like tearing apart households, etc. Smoking rarely has that effect. As far as I know, anyway... |

but we’re not necessarily talking about alcholism. There is such thing as a social drinker and on percentage there are more people who drink but our not alcholics then there are smokers that aren’t addicted.
@Nbarden: u don’t even know what that means

Ah, I tried to stay out of it, but I gotta jump in.
Drinking is only bad if you don’t act responsibly about it.
If you don’t, it can become a major problem. If you do, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it.
@Any of the other Christians on this board who might be against all drinking: Jesus turned water into wine, yes? I doubt he would’ve done that if alchohol was inherently bad...
(And don’t say that the wine was non-alchoholic. That’s called grape juice, and these people were in the Roman Empire. They knew the difference. When they wrote "wine" they meant "wine.")
@psychosick: I know some people who smoke, but don’t have a problem with it (as in, it isn’t a problem, not "they don’t see the problem") Once again, its also dependent on the circumstances and the product. For example, cigars aren’t as bad as cigarretes (from what I understand) and pipes even less so. I’m guessing your girlfriend isn’t dmoking a cigar or pipe, though... also, depending on your "local air quality," it might not be that bad. ie, if you live up in the mountains, its not nearly as bad as living in NY city. (nothing against NY, you understand... but they’re a bit more polluted than a mountain top.) At the same time, smoking’s never actually provided any real benefit that I’m aware of besides chasing the insects away...
Both are bad when not done responsibly. Its much easier for smoking to become bad, but drinking can cause greater harm when it does, like CG pointed out.
I’d never smoke, because I hate smoke in general. I like wine, on the other hand... good stuff. But somehow, I get the feeling it wouldn’t take much to send me up the wall. I’ve had it in minimal amounts, as our church uses real wine for Communion. That being one of the reasons I feel that drinking is not necessarily bad.
Alright. I’m done rambling for now. Its late here and I’m tired. |

Cant vote eitherway, i hate smoking cos it makes me smell and i get 2nd hand smoke inhalation, and it kills you.
Hate drinking to the point of being drunk as it causes antisocial behavior, people getting beaten up, killed and same as smoking; it kills you.
Sorry if this insults anyone but in England there is a huge problem with people, particularly young ones, getting hammered and taking up vital emergency services because theyve hurt themselves or someone else. And they all need new livers asap and that deprives people who need one genuinely. |

I am a part-time smoker and used to be a full time drinker. What do i mean by that? I smoke a sig once every 6 months, not as a social smoker, but because i want to. I drink because i enjoy it, especially when we are with good company and are going to have some fun and later sleep in a bud’s house. Or drink when i want to get away from some sick situations in my life.
Point is, nothing hurts when done with a meter. When you say enough, mean it. Now, if you got some bad examples and want to avoid these things just to skip them, it’s a whole different thing. I don’t think smoking is disgusting, unless for the times it annoys you.
As for drinking, it’s all anout having some meter. That’s all IMHO. |
