Welcome to NBarden’s Who’s Who on CobraCards. Today, NBarden interviews macheteman.

macheteman quick facts

Name: macheteman
Favorite Trading Card Game: LotR TCG
Favorite Strategies: Corruption and a variety of FP strategies.
Least Favorite Strategy: Rohan. Quick Fact: He wrote an article on a Rohan deck he never tested that won him $25.
Interesting Fact: Almost got sent to the slammer for brandishing a machete.

The Interview

Interviewer: macheteman, thank you for being my guest today. Well...I’ll start with the questions right off. How long have you been a member of CobraCards?

macheteman: "um, isn’t that my file you’re holding?" (grabs file from NB) "let’s see, it says: Joined: 07 Dec 2006. so that puts it at about 10 months.

Interviewer: And...which Trading Card Games are you interested most in on CobraCards?

macheteman: a quick look at where my posts have been will tell you that clear enough. LOTR. and if the member’s lounge was a TCG, i’d be interested in that too.

Interviewer: So, macheteman, what is your favorite strategy in Lord of the Rings? Both the Free Peoples and Shadow sides.

macheteman: well, shadow is definitely corruption. i started with corruption, and i’ve enjoyed it the whole way through.

freeps, i like a lot of different strategies. love rangers, and elves, last alliance is what i started with. that’s cool. gandalf is neat, dwarves can be fun. not a fan of rohan.

Interviewer: So, if you were FORCED to run a Rohan deck, which Rohan strategy would you run?

macheteman: i don’t know, i hear eyowen wounding is good. but i’d probably end up with some sort of mounts/plains run deck.

Interviewer: For future reference, here is a link to the deck macheteman is referring to.

Now a personal question. Do you usually carry a machete with you wherever you go?

macheteman: well, that’s not exactly the deck i was reffering to. i’ve never played with that dck, and i think it’s a little unstable. but hey, i got $25 out of it so i’m not complaining!!

as for the machete, i wouldn’t say i carry one around wherever i go. but i have a mexican machete. i have a job where i use machete’s. i got stopped by a cop while i was walking down the road to my brother-in-law’s house to cut some sticks with my machete. someone called the police when they saw a young male walking down the street with a big honkin’ machete. luckily my brother-in-law drove up while i was talking to him so i didn’t get put in the slammer. true story. all of it.

Interviewer: Interesting. Well, that’s all we have time for right now. Thank you, macheteman for being on the show!

macheteman: is that it? don’t i at least get a happy meal?

Welcome to NBarden’s Whos Who on CobraCards. Today, NBarden interviews "Uncle" DainIronfoot.

DainIronfoot Quick Facts:

Name: DainIronfoot
Favorite Trading Card Game: LotR TCG
Favorite DCs to Desgin: Dwarven
Favorite Strategies: Elves and Nazgul.
Interesting Fact: Hates coffee.

Interviewer: Welcome to the show, Uncle Dain. How long have you been a member of CobraCards?

DainIronfoot: Hey, thanks for having me. This chair is comfy, but someone left their machete here.

*pulls it out from beneath the cushion and tosses it away, ignoring the scream as it hits the guy holding NBarden’s cue cards*

Anyway, I joined CobraCards on January 12th of this year, though I was lurking about as a non-member for a few days before that. I’ve been around the LOTR TCG community for quite a bit longer than that, though, as I was very active at Decipher’s boards and then a couple branch-off forums from June of 2004 until about a year ago.

Interviewer: Erm...thank you.

*sirens outside, paramedics rush in and carry guy holding cue cards away on a stretcher*

O...kay...

So Dain, my records here show that you’ve been posting a lot in the LotR seection, mostly the DC section. Could you tell us your favorite culture to design DCs for?

DainIronfoot: Dwarves. No question about it. I like big damage bonuses and powerful beat-down types, so I LOVE making Dwarven cards. It’s a culture I don’t think Big D ever brought to its full potential.

Interviewer: So, I hear that you have created a Green culture. Will there be any updates on that? And will we be able to see any other new cultures coming out soon?

DainIronfoot: Yeah, that’s kind of a funny thing. When I made the Green (Mirkwood) culture over at Decipher’s boards, it wasn’t very well-recieved. But then when I made the move here and starting getting into DCs again, I revived the idea after seeing the Magic card game icons available to us...Green nudged me into giving Mirkwood another try. And this time, it took off. People liked it so much that a couple of other folks have incorporated it into their sets, which I take as a HUGE compliment.

As for other new cultures, you never know, but I wouldn’t bet on it. Outside of The Hobbit (which is what I really created the Green culture for), I don’t plan on going outside the main works of The Lord of the Rings for a while, so everything I have in mind should fit inside current cultures, be they old (like Moria and Dunland) or new (like Orc and Men). Like I said, Green was mainly a Hobbit thing, but I’m sprinkling it throughout my other sets, too.

Once I finish my currently-planned sets, I might change my mind, though. Black has some potential, or White, or something else entirely....

Say, by the way, do I get a complimentary mug or something after this? One with "The NBarden Show" on it?

Interviewer: Participants on NBarden show will receive a FREE Happy Meal. With a cup of coffee, if you choose.

Anyway, thank you for that bit of information. I have heard that you have just recently begun to actually play Lord of the Rings. What is your favorite decktype, for both the Free Peoples and the shadow sides?

DainIronfoot: Blech. Sick Can’t stand coffee, so nevermind that.

For Free Peoples, I’ve surprised myself a bit by developing a fondness for Elves. I have an unusual Elven hunters deck that has performed admirably every time, even when it’s gotten bad draws and lost. But I also enjoy Gondor rangers, and have another deck that I’ve made numerous revisions to that’s also pretty good now. It uses a combo of "noble" rangers, Pippin WoBaS, and a few fortifications that all work remarkably well together.

Before playing, I THOUGHT my favorite would be Dwarves, but that hasn’t been the case. I’m still trying to get a Dwarven deck I like...I’ll finish it eventually.

For Shadow, the answer is obvious to anyone who’s played me before: Nazgul! Twisted Evil They’re SO versatile, but my favorite has quickly become Forestguls. I use Nazzies in over half my decks. Very Happy They pair particularly well with the two FP decks I mentioned before.

A close second is Moria goblins. A semi-swarm with a few of their heavy hitters mixed in (like Ol’ Balgy and Host of Moria) has held up pretty well even against newer FP strategies so far.

Interviewer: Do you like to play any alternate formats at all?

DainIronfoot: Uh...’fraid I don’t follow you there, chief. "Alternate formats" meaning...?

Interviewer: I’m sorry. Alternate formats meaning block formats such as FotR, Hunter, Movie Block or any other block, or a format with odd rules, such as Highlander (1 card per deck), 6-site blitz or 27 site marathon.

DainIronfoot: Ahhh. Well, I haven’t yet, but I’m sure I’ll get there. Movie Block has always sounded fun....

You have to understand, I’m still a newbie when it comes to actually playing. Razz I’ve always just been a "student of the game", as I like to say, when I’ve been designing DCs and such. Now I’m actually playing it, which is quite different, I’ve found.

Interviewer: I see. And now for a personal question. Do you usually carry around a battle-axe?

DainIronfoot: What self-respecting Dwarf wouldn’t, lad?

Well, okay, not ALL the time. It kind of sticks out when, say, going to church, or wearing a suit. Last time I tried THAT, I found out that suit jackets don’t stand up to the rubbing from the blade as well as leather and chain-mail. I...wouldn’t recommend it.

Interviewer: Well that’s all we have time for now. Thank you for being on the show Uncle Dain!

NEWSFLASH: We have an update on the man who was hospitalized earlier in the show. His condition has stabilized and he is currently undergoing surgery.

DainIronfoot: Eheh. Eheheh. Yeah, uh, sorry about that. I’ll try not to leave any weapons around for the next guest....
