Okay, this is the story:

I’m a historyteacher and I’m almost done with WWII. Next chapter is dealing with the Cold War and I want to approach things a little different. I was thinking about some kind of RPG in which the kids participate. They have to accomplish certain tasks with which they earn points or new information. Something like that. I was also thinking in deviding the subject in some partial subjects like: Berlin Wall, Cuba Crisis, Vietnam War, Korea War, Blockade of Berlin.
I thinks if I can put it in a game they will be more eager to take notice of history, for it is hard to motivate them for history. Ideas, and serious ones are more than welcome...
Please, think with me!

Okay, I’m serious, but I kinda tend to ramble when I’m thinking, so be aforewarned, and be prepared to filter through my brainstorming.

Cold War was all about espionage and diplomacy, so you could try some sort of mental game, focusing primarily about running a superpower during the Cold War. Like, trying to balance diplomacy. They can RP a leader of one of the countries, like the US, Russia, China, Germany, UK, Balkans, Cuba, etc. Then they have to try to juggle around the diplomacy of the era. That would be an awesome way to teach about the time period.

More rambling later.

Rambling/brainstorming:

I’m picturing some sorta arms race/espionage/propaganda setup for all sides involved.

Or maybe a slightly more serious version of the "Nbardania" thread:
http://lotrtcgdb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=5678

(Okay, a lot more serious....)

You could set up the nations with -- depending on class size -- a few students in each nation, give them their secret objectives (IE, one person is NASA; he has to get into space before the Russians. If not, his secondary objective, the Moon, kicks in, etc), and any supertechs, etc. they want to develop (AKA antimatter assassin bombs, etc.) get passed by you, as the stern and unyielding hand of fate/laws of physics. (No Death Star, no demon ninjas, no zombie armies, etc.)

People in the same nation and Allies can communicate with eachother. They may have conflicting objectives (Russia Military: Wipe out the UK; Russia politician: Don’t tick off the US before you know you can nuke the snot out of ’em)

Espionage would be hard to work out, but I’m sure there’s some way to get it to work.

Top objective of all parties is to accumulate the highest score. Scores would be based on completing objectives.

And you could throw in a few unexpected crisis, too, if you want. OPEC gets it into their heads to fund Judicial Republicanism, or Dr. Doom conquers the world, or something.

Could be an interesting way to introduce all sorts of topics, too.
You might even want to start it at the end of WW2; have the end of WW2 leading into the Cold War. After all, history books may be episodic, but reality (generally) isn’t.

Okay, I’m thinking all that would probably be too complicated, but it might give you a more workable idea.
Never kid about politicians. The more bizarre the joke, the more likely it is to come true.

Well I think you should do something more simple than what the guys are saying. I have some experience with teaching and these complicated mechanisms and rules will be just too much for a few classes. Gil-estel will probably agree with me Very Happy

I think first you should set the the game’s sides, which could be IMO USA and Russia. Simple as that.

Then I’d split the next step in two diferent ways: 1 - you could make a game where all the class would participate or 2 - make a smaller game for a group of 4~6 students and they’d be playing in groups.

I think a boardgame would be cool, with dice and stuff, and a few cards with tasks on them. Sort of a modified RISK game, you know? Then this keypoints you are listing could be like special squares in the game on which they had to answer questions on the subject. Maybe take decisions like "you are a US general. Russia has *******. What are you doing? A.*** B.***".

Don’t know if that’s quite what you were thinking of, but this is just my two cents for now. You may think it’s just too simple or childish tho. Will think about other ideas and let you know if I have any!

Some more information...very happy with all the replies so far. It is a large class, 30 pupils, but they’re the top of the school, so they can manage a few difficulties. The main goal is ofcourse that they learn about the cold war so indepth info is good and that’s why I’m thinking about certain tasks they have to complete before coninueïng, almost like completing a level. The difficulty is to send the pupils in the right direction, to keep it historically accurate...It can also be a large game in terms of time. I have them 2 hours per week, and am willing to spend 5 or 6 weeks on this topic....

I like LK idea, kinda like a choose your own adventure book. if you choose this, go here, then you get another decision, stuff like that. It would take a lot of work though, and could end in various scenarios. Then you could say what really happened and they would kinda have an idea of what was going on.

I think that it would be good to really push through the idea of Mutually-Assured-Destruction. i.e., nuclear politics. Brinksmanship.
