This is the second chronicle of debates.
Debate Topic: As seen in The Return of the King Extended Edition and in the book, Gandalf is confronted by the Witch-king. Had it not been for the arrival of Rohan’s armies, would Gandalf had been killed? |

I think that Gandalf would have been killed, because Gandalf’s staff was broken, obviously the Witch King’s power was greater than Gandalf’s. (sorry Gandalf lovers.) And I don’t think it’s in the WK’s nature to show mercy. |

True, the Witch-king is not merciful, but I read something in my LOTR encyclopedia that said that Gandalf could not be killed as Gandalf the White. |

| i think not. he is a white wizard, and still had glamdring. plus gwaihir might have swooped in, and attacked the nazgul. then mabey pippin would have attacked. plus when gandalf was a grey, the nazgul couldn’t stand before him in weather top. (the FotR) |
There is a power in this world beyond any of us, and Jesus is that power and The Savior.
this is my attempt to look cool.

Very true, Pipsqueak, but the Witch-king’s power waxed greatly as the WotR progressed, so let us assume that the Witch-king’s power doubled or so, and Gandalf would have a more hard time defeating him. But the again, Gandalf CANNOT be defeated by ANYONE as Gandalf the White, so it doesn’t really matter. |

Now, first of all, I’d like to know if we’re going by the books or by the movies. In the movie, it was as has already been said: the WK broke Gandy’s staff, and then turned to deal with the Rohirrim. In the books, though, there was a slightly different confrontation at the Great Gate:
There waiting, silent and still in the space before the Gate, sat Gandalf upon Shadowfax: Shadowfax who alone among the free horses of the earth endured the terror, unmoving, steadfast as a graven image in Rath Dinen.
"You cannot enter here," said Gandalf, and the huge shadow halted. "Go back to the abyss prepared for you! Go back! Fall into the nothingness that awaits you and your Master. Go!"
The Black Rider flung back his hood...From a mouth unseen there came a deadly laughter.
"Old fool!" he said...And with that he lifted high his sword and flames ran down the blade.
Gandalf did not move...Horns, horns, horns. In dark Mindolluin’s sides they dimly echoed. Great horns of the North wildly blowing. Rohan had come at last. (The Return of the King, The Seige of Gondor)
See here there was not actually an attack, but just the prelude. There may have been a duel, but I think Gandalf the White would have emerged all the stronger. |
