Community members can give or trade GP anyway they want to. Pay a friend to proofread your article. Set up a fantasy sports pool. Hold a contest (or a tournament!) with GP as prizes. The only thing I can think of that would NOT be allowed is paying for Article Contest votes; that would be dealt with the same way as any other sort of contest abuse.
If you want to set up your own contest with an entry fee, the way to do it would be to have participants donate X amount of gold to you and put "contest entry fee" or something in the message box. When someone donates to you and includes a message, you’re notified by PM of that event.
Okay, thanks for the advice! Hmm...CobraCards stock market, anyone? |

Sorry, Felipe, I didn’t reply to your post earlier because it was scarily dense and I didn’t have time to consider everything till this afternoon.
The idea of several layers of upgrades to avatars and signatures is a good one I think, and some version of that may be implemented eventually. This wouldn’t work for smilies, because you can put those little pics into your posts with or without the smiley code.
I also like many of your ideas about how GP should (and should not) be awarded. But, I think anything that requires special maintenance or a complex set of rules is not going to be practical in the long run.
What I will try to do is set it up so that gold pieces are given for EACH 500 characters. So, a 5000-character article would immediately earn 10 GP rather than 1. I may also look into automatically adding or subtracting GP based on each vote given to an article. |

MY question why did you install this system in the first place to promote longer posts? |

I think you just answered your own question. |

Take your pick:
1) It was requested.
2) It’s fun (nifty items, role-play sense, etc.)
3) It encourages "real" posts!
GP = gold pieces.
As to your other question, I believe I had it temporarily set to 350 chars during testing, but it’s 500 now. If you think you got credit for a 400-character post, let me know and I’ll look into it; however, the most likely reason for this is simply that humans tend to count letters, while computers count everything. |

To Cobra: Yeah, I’m pretty good on this "prize-awarding" and "pre-requisite" thing, but since I’m not used to run online things, I’m not aware of howmuchtrouble they are to maintain working properly... However, since SOME of the ideas might be fine, I hope you don’t mind if I keep firing them at will, only trying to help ! Actually, this post is mainly to talk about the gp awarding system on the Article Contest area: I don’t think low grades should sap away gp from users. You said it yourself, sooner or later, piling up gp is gonna become the new "status-war", specially on the Lord of the Rings TCG area, and I think this might encourage some users to, in a very close future, under-rate an Article, simply to take away gp from a user. Also, the simple fact that you get pounded AND low-rated sometimes CAN be enough reason to discourage new writers, if not only that, but their precious gp gets sapped in the process, it might make them not wanting to write Articles at all, only reply to them. Also, again, on this subject, considering this happen to someone, that someone might be mad at the people who low-rated his Article, and may start to simply under-rate every single Strategy Article simply to sap away gp from the users... I’m not telling you this WILL happen, but thinking on the long run, it MIGHT. Instead of doing this, you could award gp monthly for the article, equal to the number of stars it received, rounded down, so gp wouldn’t get out of hand for grades, and this would actually encourage people to write more and more. For instance, even if I wrote 2 lousy Articles (rated 1 star each, at the end of the month), I’d still get a gp for each of them, and it would encourage me to try and write better ones. See where I’m getting at?
Well, that’s it for now, just tell me what you think!
PS: Sorry, again, for the long post (I know you have more important things to do), but as I said, I liek this stuff, so I get carried away when I’m writing about it, ideas simply come floating... |

The "end-of-the-month" thing runs into the maintenance problem again, because it requires a human to crunch the numbers and give out GP accordingly. (Or alternately, it would require some pretty complex coding that would be impossible to test in advance -- I’d just have to cross my fingers...)
The system with GP for each vote, on the other hand, is automatic and was a snap to set up. Now I can forget about it and work on other improvements.
Voting problems in the article contests, whether by actual "fraud" or simply by voting in self-interest, are almost non-existant now. If our users can behave themselves when REAL money (or store credit at any rate) is at stake, I don’t think fake money will be causing any problems there!
However, I will be keeping an eye on this, and if a problem develops I’ll simply undo the changes. |
