| It wasn’t THAT bad. Although I might have gotten an editted version... however, I believe my reply was slightly worse. |

I got a story for ya. Kind of interesting anyway.
Last night when all you guys were sleeping in your cozy little beds, I was sitting in the corner of my room reading a book in a bag chair. American Eagles 12:00am my cell phone rings on the other side of the room.
I’m like "Who the hell?" Then I realize maybe there’s a problem, so I ran to the phone, and when I saw who it was... A million things went through my mind. Is my E.S. gear ready, where is my uniform, do I have a vehicle, what am I canceling tomorrow morning!
It was F.O. Dalbec, "There’s an ELT going off! and a plane reported missing in Ely. Get a ground team organized and head up here now!"
It’s a 60 mile drive to the Duluth Airport where we were assembling for the mission briefing and departure.
I woke up my mom and told her that my truck was full of gas for her to take to work in the morning. She just got up and said "ok hunny, don’t drive too fast." Then I hopped in her 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan for a ride. (I told them I could travel 60 miles in 30 minutes)
Middle of a foggy dark night I’m flying down the county road at 110 mph. I grab my cell phone and start calling GTM members. I got the funniest greetings Here is just one of them:
"Hi, there’s an ELT going off! Can you be at the building in 30 minutes?"
"A what?"
"An ELT!"
"Tell me the first part again?"
"A plane crash!!!"
"Your telling me this in the middle of the night?"
I managed to get only 4 members, but I had to pick one up on the way. It wasn’t a problem because he lived on a road I take as a shortcut every week.
Now I’m on the freeway, and every once in awhile I’ll see a lonely car travelling the freeway at legal 70mph, but it’s not long before they’re in my rear window and out of sight. I was going 120 mph in my mom’s van. Just imagine the conversation I started in the sports car I passed at almost twice it’s speed. In a mini van
Lucky for me the van started to shut itself down over 120mph. The spedometer was maxed at 120, and the van was definately not going to let me go over that.
Soon I was at Midway Rd. My turnoff and shortcut route I needed to pick up my friend. Now a 55mph speed limit... there were no cars around. I don’t know how fast I was going, but it was fast enough for me. Especially because my phone started ringing again. "Yes, I’ll be there in about 5 min to pick you up."
I was probably going around 90 over this hill when I see about 20 flashing lights arcoss the entire road The road was blocked with a rediculous 10 or so road block signs AND a fence going into both ditches! I’m not kidding when I say the detour sign literally said, "Find another route".
So I got back to the freeway going much faster, and headed towards Duluth. Luckily the city was dead, and I got through with little resistance. Now if you’ve ever driven through Duluth you will know it’s all curving ramps the whole way. My tires literally squealed on those ramps at every turn. A little overdue? Probably, but I told my Flight Officer that I would be there in 30 min.
Finally I picked up my friend and made it to the building at 1:00am. 15 min late because it was 12:15am when I started from my home. Not a problem though. I just signed in, and we headed towards Ely.
Then Dalbec, the ground team leader for this mission, says, "I took a sleeping pill a half hour ago, and I don’t know how far I will be able to continue because it is priscription sleeping medication." oops
We had an aircraft search team take off at 1:00am, and they were already in the area. Then we hear on the radio that the Ely airport was reporting yelling coming from the woods. It was too dark to find them immediatly, so we continued to head towards the airport for the search.
In the end, the guy lived with just a broken leg injury. This mission I did not get to find out more info like I do on other missions because we were actually not the ones to find it. The sheriff was there first, and our job was done when the ELT was turned off. We were tired and headed home.
I just woke up lol. It was a long night. |
