THE APPENDIX! THE APPENDIX! THE APPENDIX! There’s no use!
*sorry about that*
Um. Yeah, above is true. Also, the Bible cannot be exact fact because human emotions cannot be completely transcribed into words, only approximated by them.
A monkey does not have a soul. Prove that you do. Oh, that’s right... you can’t. Let me guess "Faith..."
It doesn’t matter what we evolved from. What matters is we are genetically different organisms from every other organism on the planet- hence people eating anything but people is not cannibalism.
Religion is the reason Iraq is so hard. In case you all are ignorant of their culture, their religion includes a set theocracy- by replacing their government, we are replacing part of their religion. For this reason, many killings have taken place.
I find it interesting that "killing" is different that "murder." Why? Because the government established by humans authorized one and gave it a name. If you truly believe that Jesus is the only true king, what use is there for you to follow the laws anyway?
As for if there were no greater purpose, why don’t we go around killing people, the answer is because I currently have no desire to die. If I kill people, kill me. If I don’t, they dont. This non-violent way, we both get what we want.
Here’s an interesting propsal- even if there is a god, what purpose is there in life? Of course, to get into heaven. But what point iss there to being in heaven? Even if you assume that every bit of Christianity is true, what IS the point?
I actually find more point to life without religion. The religious selfishly persue heaven through unselfish means, but when a non-religious person does something nice for others, you know it’s genuine- coming from the good of their soul, not trying to gain them divine standing. |

Because God commands his people to follow the laws.
Quote: As for if there were no greater purpose, why don’t we go around killing people, the answer is because I currently have no desire to die. If I kill people, kill me. If I don’t, they dont. This non-violent way, we both get what we want.
yes, i think we all agree killing doesn’t help anybody. but you can not say killing is wrong if we are just evolved differently than the other organisms. if evolution were true, humans are no better than any other organism. wether that be an ape, or a tomato plant. not saying we aren’t more "advanced" or more "complex", we just aren’t better than any other organism. if, by chance we evolved to a more complex organism, we can’t say we are better. who knows, in the next billion years, the tomato plants could evolve into a race far supirior to humans. and we might get killed by them like we kill other organisms. so you have to say the killing of ANY organism is wrong, or it is perfectly fine (morally, not saying it is helpful) for a person to do whatever they want.
fortunatly, through God we know that we are better than the other organisms. and he has given us dominion over them. Ge 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
for our use, not our abuse. and he cares sbout humans more than any other part of creation. Mt 6:26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
Quote: Here’s an interesting propsal- even if there is a god, what purpose is there in life? Of course, to get into heaven. But what point iss there to being in heaven? Even if you assume that every bit of Christianity is true, what IS the point?
you assume our purpose in life is to get to heaven. that isn’t true. Prove your premise and maybe you’ll get somewhere in your argument. Man was created to glorify God. THAT is our purpose. yes, heaven is where we will be able to fulfill what we were created for, for eternity. and when we are doing what we are created for, we will have perfect joy and pleasure. in the presence of our Lord.
Quote: I actually find more point to life without religion. The religious selfishly persue heaven through unselfish means, but when a non-religious person does something nice for others, you know it’s genuine- coming from the good of their soul, not trying to gain them divine standing.
all humans are selfish. a "non-religious" person when they do something nice for others, is trying to fill the void iside them. God made it so that "it feels better to give than recieve". because he wants us to be loving of others. but since we are sinful, we cannot be perfect in this life, and all humans will be selfish.
and that is why Christ came and paid the penalty for our evil. that we may be with Him forever! |

LC911, I’m working on a response to one of your earlier posts, but due to its complexity, I’ll likely take it off line (through PM) since this conversation has shifted directions from the questions I was answering. On to the topic of morals:
Where do you get your morals from? How do you know what is right and wrong? If it is from society and popular opinion, then morals are very flexible and will bend and change with popular opinion. Currently, it is immoral to kill a person who is outside of the womb. (I’m not going to go into abortion here, so please don’t take that step.) What happens when popular opinion states that it is ok, indeed encouraged to kill people over the age of 65, or those who have disabilities? Then does it become OK?
I believe in moral absolutes. There are things that are right to do all the time, and there are things that are wrong to do all the time and those things that are right and wrong don’t change with popular opinion or who our current law makers are. |

ok in answer to the first thing you said. God came to the earth for man. not monkeys. no where in the Bible does it say, "I came for man, and monkeys and other animal." He came to earth for humans.
to previous statement. as i said we don’t know everything, so we can’t know what the appendix is for. it may be nothing, or it may be something small or huge. |

I’m not sure I quite understand what you’re saying here... I would consider abuse of other organisms to be needlessly killing them. Not quite sure what you’re trying to say.

If glorifying god is your purpose in life and getting to heaven lets you glorify god, then isn’t your purpose in life in effect to get to heaven?

I must admit, sometimes I do nice things for others because they make me feel good, but sometimes, I just do them because it makes them happy, even people I don’t know and will never know again. For example, I sang a concert for some people in a local nursing home because one of my friends’ grandfather used to live there and he always said there was nothing to do over the holidays. So, I got them another activity. I sure didn’t have that much fun at it, and I didn’t feel any voids being filled. It was just the right thing to do. My point isn’t that people can live completely unselfishly, just that unselfish acts are 100% always sincere by non-religious people.
I know the appendix is for nothing. You’ve got to be crazy to think otherwise. I’ve known a bazillion people who got appendicitis, got it removed, and have had no affect on their lives living without an appendix. That would be assuming you don’t believe science, which to make a statement like "We can’t know what the appendix is for." It had a use in some previous evolutionary state. I can’t remember which one, but it does something in other animals, just not in us, implying that the appendix just hasn’t been bred out of the human gene pool, and due to modern medicine probably will never be.
To: M_H Moral absolutes are a little tough for me. For example, the old classic problem- a dude needs to get his wife some medicine to live. Unfortunately, they are too poor to afford it. He can easily steal it.
The moral absolutists would say you can’t steal, no drugs for her.
I would say that you have to weigh one value over the other, and that the human life is worth more than the $100 of stolen medicine.
I agree with your theme, but absolutes on anything is a risky business. |

where to we get our morals from? from my experience it has clearly been from one’s family and society.
On the subject of flexibility. just take a look at history. slavery, holocaust, conquistadors. Weren’t the last two here UNDER the word of god?
you have to see that even with people believing in god there are moral autrocities. |

i guess i would say we are to follow the laws of our government, unless they are in direct opposition to God’s laws.

humans are dependent on other organisms to survive. God has given humans dominion over the earth. we can kill organisms for our uses. we are not to abuse or power over it. but we are to use it.
Quote: If glorifying god is your purpose in life and getting to heaven lets you glorify god, then isn’t your purpose in life in effect to get to heaven?
no. i think you are miss-defining purpose. our purpose is what we were created for. to glorify God. heaven is the place where we will fulfill our purpose. we were created for God’s glory.
Quote: I must admit, sometimes I do nice things for others because they make me feel good, but sometimes, I just do them because it makes them happy, even people I don’t know and will never know again. here, you have said a wonderful thing. Quote: It was just the right thing to do. how did you know it was right? Because God puts it in us to know that being unselfish is right.
there is one thing here that i don’t understand. you have said that you are not religious, yet, you also said: Quote: I must admit, sometimes I do nice things for others because they make me feel good and: Quote: unselfish acts are 100% always sincere by non-religious people.
you just said you sometimes do things because they make you feel good, but uselfish things done by unreligious people are 100% always sincere.
i think there are times when religious and non-religious people do "good things" for selfish reasons. in this case, there isn’t a "100% always".
as for the appendix, what about the tonsils? i mean, just because we haven’t found a purpose for the appendix, doesn’t mean it has one. But, just because we haven’t found a use for it also doesn’t mean there isn’t. or perhaps God created it for future needs we may have. with all the pollution, the earth may not be quite the same after a while.
when adam and eve were created they lived in a perfect world. so they did not need protection from disease, yet God created an amazing defense system against disease. (of course i am assuming that God exists, but what i am trying to say is that the appendix does not go against creation at all.)
well, thats all for now. merry Christmas. |

By sincere, I mean I really hope they enjoy them. I do the acts for the sake of people smiling, and whether that makes me feel good or not, I’m not doing iit to gain influence with any celestial, social, or religious stance.
What about thou shalt not kill? The most basic law here is flaunted in wars, when even the religious kill because the human-established government said to.
The point about misuse of power is we are ruining the earth. If we ruin the earth, we make it tougher for there to be more people, which could a) be thought of as murder, but also could be thought of as preventing more people who could glorify god. In either case, this is clearly against religion. Yet, most religious people belong to the majot political party that pays least attention to environmental issues.
I view the right thing to do because it makes many people smile and nobody frown. Call it divine if you want, but I think of it as the simplest logic. It was no pain for me and great joy for all the elderly in attendance.
Well, I can’t really argue the appendix issue any more. It has no purpose, and if you don’t believe that, it’s a matter of needing to take more science courses.
Merry Christmas/Happy holidays.
P.S. One final, cool thought my WHAP class brought up. Aliens are life from celestial sources. That means Jesus was an alien. That means even all you religious guys DO believe in an alien! |

well, it depends on your definition of "alien". if you are talking about a being who is not from earth, yes Jesus is an alien. but, in the sense of an organism living in outer space, jesus is not an alien.
i think it would be cool if we found aliens.
Quote: By sincere, I mean I really hope they enjoy them. I do the acts for the sake of people smiling, and whether that makes me feel good or not, I’m not doing iit to gain influence with any celestial, social, or religious stance.
i think both religious and non-religious people are guilty of doing kind things for their own pleasure. and both religious and non-religious people do kind things unselfishly. i don’t think you can separate it. because there is NO way we can influence our standing with God by what we do. the only way we even are allowed in to heaven, is because Jesus came and died for the sins of the world. so, though some people falsely believe that they can get somewhere by their good works, a true Christian should not. The only way we “get anywhere with God”, is by His free grace.
Quote: What about thou shalt not kill? The most basic law here is flaunted in wars, when even the religious kill because the human-established government said to.
this is a tough one. i think a more accurate translation would be "thou shalt not murder", because there were many times when God told His people to go to war and to destroy a people. but to kill for revenge, or something like that, would definitly be wrong. tough one, many interpritations.
Quote: The point about misuse of power is we are ruining the earth. though "most" (and i think it would surprise you how many religious people belong to libral parties) people belong to a party that cares least about environmental issues, most do not think it is right to abuse our power. and most of them think other things about the parties they are in are more important. (i’m not saying they are.) another thing is that "environmentalists", often view nature as equal to humans, which according to scripture, is wrong. abuseing the earth is definately wrong. but we definately need to use the earth. we have been given dominion over the earth.
i’m not saying the appendix has a use. i don’t know, i haven’t done enough research to know. but even if the appendix doesn’t have a use, it does not (by any means) go against creation. God created things in our bodies that wouldn’t have been needed before the fall.
happy Christmas |
