| Plainswalkers aren’t dark. They may become at will. Some carry on as while magicians, angel-friends. |

Well, drop by one of my recent MTG articles, then. A lot of the decks there pack a good punch (meaning they can compete in tournaments with at least a good shot), do not cost too much and can win you some good prizes in smaller tourneys, which, let’s face it, is not happening in any near future with LotR, a dying game. Also, for the most popular TCG on the planet ever since it’s release, less than 20 bucks for a COMPETITIVE deck is a pretty sweet deal, since the game CAN afford prizes for its competitors.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’ll always have LotR in my heart, it’s the TCG that made me good at playing cards, and if I win all FNMs I take place nowadays is mostly because of what I’ve learned of TCG theory and playing skills with LotR, but I recognize a dying game when I see one. All those problems with wordings, cards being banned/restricted like crazy, desperate greed for money (not reprinting cards is a good sign of it, check how many Yu-Gi-oh! and Pokémon reprints are there), confusing cards, unreviewed cards, etc.
Also, sincerely, the moment they started with forbidding cards from the first block to work on the second one’s site path is the very moment the game started dying. Then, there was the Ally issue, so much that they practically discontinued printing of them, and now they killed them for good. These things kill a card game. These and lack of support for players.
Also, quoting NBarden, "one TCG is enough", and when the prices skyrocketed ’round here, back in early King Block, it was just too much to bear with. If I’m playing ONE TCG, then it’ll be one that’s fun, that CAN be played without spending loads of money - and yes, it CAN, if any of you are interested, I can show how, even suggest a few begginer’s builds to try a hand at it at home with a brother or a friend (and we all know these are opposite things ) - and that can give me a return not only in fun, but in cards, and perhaps even in money (I can make a good profit by selling cards ’round here at a higher price, and this year I’m shooting for a spot at the Nationals, to try for one at Worlds, and there’s a MONEY prize for international events, ranging from U$ 200.00 to U$ 40,000.00). |

| You have to look at the game from a different perspective. Well, NBArden is on to something, Yu-Gi-oh! is the most unnoriginal TCG I’ve seen so far, copying MTG to the core, so it’s very similar, although MTG is more balanced, cards are cooler, and the game-plan is much more challenging and savage. That being said, LotR points to a whole other direction, since you "feel" the connection to your Fellowship, you feel their pain when they take a hit (in Magic, you just throw the creature to the bin and make a nother one, you ARE a wizard after all...), etc. You’re right, it’s a GREAT game, and as long as you can keep up your playgroup, do it, I’m still sad I didn’t get to keep mine. Also, cards are cheaper for you guys, so you can maintain the group easily. However, once the game fizzles completly, playing with the same cards over andover tends to get boring, and since you won’t be spendind that much with LotR anymore (nowhere to buy from), try a hand at MTG every now and then, I tell you guys, it’s a rather cool TCG, too. It’s amazing to see a strategy coming together nicely, to foil your opponent’s plans ("response" is much more common to find in Magic, thus creating some cool situations), to topdeck that one bomb you were needing (we don’t draw that many cards, only one per turn, unless you use some effect to change that), etc. All I can say is: if you can keep a playgroup, PLEASE don’t let LotR die, my memories of it live on with you guys, reading your articles, doubts, ideas, etc. But, if you want to compete, or to play a game still evolving and that’ll be around for quite some time, then try MTG. You’ll be surprised. |
