THe long and short of it is yes.
Try to keep your mines (cryt, met, and deut) at about the same levels.
As far as energy, keep using solar plants, but also try to get fusion reactors sometime in the next week. (to find out what your need to get that click on "technology" in the right hand panel, it will show the perquisites required.)
EDIT..I sent a few starter resources to help NB get started.

In general, the best strategy is to get your metal mines and crystal mines up long before you really do a huge amount with your deut. The reason is, you need crystal and metal for everything and when you get up to the higher levels, you will be waiting forever to get all the metal you need to advance your buildings. In order to build a metal mine you need metal and crystal in a 4:1 ratio. In order to build a crystal mine you need metal and crystal in a 2:1 ratio. In order to build a Deut Synth, you need metal to crystal in a 3:1 ratio and Solar plants just get plain expensive. Build up your metal mines and keep them at least 2 higher than your crystal mines, at least early on. I build 6M 4C 2D and that got me off to a really good start. Research is good, but you NEED resources to do that. Spend some time developing your resources and then get busy with the upgrades, next level structures (research lab, Robotics Facility, starport) don’t really worry about the research yet. Nobody will attack you while you are small.
If you want to see what I mean about expensive structures check out how much a level 16 solar plant costs at The Ogame Calculator web site. Great tool for planning things. The reason I was able to leapfrog BTO, MM and SOP is because I got my resources going fast enough...
As for the earlier question, I’m having fun raiding right now, but I should be able to have my first colony started Monday or Tuesday due to some... miscalculations on my part. Depending on how my raiding goes, it could be a lot sooner. My fleet of 8 ships has more than paid for itself now and will be very instrumental in making sure I have all the resources I need to get my colony ships.
Right now I’ve got at least 7K metal and 7K crystal inbound and nearly 20K deut in the bank half of which has come from raiding. |

What I thought.
I currently have 4M, 3C, 0D, and lvl 3 solar plant. When BtO’s resources get here (15 minutes), my Solar Plant gets an upgrade, I get a D plant, which also get an upgrade, and then whatever’s left gets spent upgrading metal and crystals. Then I go to bed, wake up and spend all my stuff that generated overnight on more upgrades.
