Laughing

There’s a difference between a homicidal maniac and a crime-war mongering cop. I’m the latter.

Very well. I will allow six officers.

AgentDrake, Frank_the_Hippo, CarpeGuitarrem, NBarden, Gate Troll, and lem0nhead are all on the force for this round. But take heed: the six of you will now not be exempt from my target list.

When you arrive at the police station this morning, you will find a note which reads:

Officers of the law,

A certain Chilean gentleman likes ironing his clothing, bird-watching, gardening, playing the piano, woodworking, fixing broken things and eating his artichokes with olive oil. He sings praises of all those and also of a small cathedral. Identify what that cathedral is, and you will identify my first victim.

You have forty-eight hours. It would be twenty-four but even assassins get the holidays off.

Do NOT miss the deadline.

Sincerely,
Incognito

Hmm...let’s see. I suspect an every-other-letter sort of cipher, for one thing. Things are just oddly phrased. Very wordy. Just unusual ways of saying things, too. I mean, "He sings praises of all those..."

And how about the bit about artichokes?

My, how you officers do entertain me so.

Time is ticking....

Okay...a further clue was nice...I didn’t expect that, actually. Well, the first four letters (if we take the first letter of each word) are "ACCG", I don’t know if that’s a clue. Or perhaps there’s a pattern to which first letters we are to take? Or is "ode" the key to it?

It’s the holidays. Even I am feeling more generous than usual. Remember that tomorrow as you partake Of the cut Turkey on your plate.

Well, I googled Chilean cathedrals, and came up with a bunch of stuff, none of which seemed relevant.

Hmmm.... I wonder.....

Think

He "sings praises," and now we have a clue: "ode"
What about "ode" as in poem-type things?

Found this:

wikipedia wrote:
In the Spanish speaking World the Chilean poet and Nobel Laureate, Pablo Neruda revived the ode; composing odes to concepts, inanimate objects, fruits, vegetables and all forms of creatures. Neruda focused on simple and common things that had never been the subject matter of poets before. Many of Neruda’s odes were published in three books, Odas elementales (Elemental Odes) (1954), Nuevas Odas Elementales (New Elemental Odes) (1956) and Navegaciones y regresos (Voyages and Homecomings) (1959). Neruda’s odes have been widely translated and have greatly contributed to the popularity of the ode among students and young poets. Some subjects of his odes included a tomato, a cat, wine and so on.

And Here:
http://sunsite.dcc.uchile.cl/chile/misc/odas.html
it lists
"Ode To an Artichoke "
His Ode to a Lemon includes mention of a cathedral (metaphorical)
Tomatoes mentions olive oil...

Hold on a moment....

I protect Lem0n!

Edit:
Oh, and thanks, of course, are due to the would-be killer.
I wonder if this means that deep down, Incognito’s really an insecure, tormented soul, and subconsciously, he doesn’t really want to kill these people, so his conscience manifests itself by giving us clues, so that we can stop him. The root of his problem is probably that time when his father didn’t buy him an ice cream cone when he was a kid....

Nah.
