Yeah, MAD would be something good to explore. I’d do some sort of diplomacy game, Risk seems like to much of a military game, whereas the Cold War was mostly fought through diplomacy, namely, mutually assured destruction. Take a look at the Cuban Missile Crisis for example. You put nukes in Europe, we put nukes in Cuba, you move yours, we move ours. The whole MAD-styled diplomacy that permeated the Cold War, as well as the space race to acheive technologial superiority, the race of countering fire-power with fire-power (MiGs vs B-70, for example), with a military supremacy, wasn’t fought on the battlefield, it was a war of diplomats, espionage and MAD.

So some sorta diplomacy game or spy game would be awesome, IMO.

I am a big fan of Drake’s overall idea, as I think it backs up the political-rather-than-military slant that should be in there (as CG and NBarden mentioned).

The Cold War was all about THREAT of action rather than actual action. Kind of like Democrats. Rolling Eyes Angel Ahem, anyway....

In all seriousness, if it’s exactly 30 kids, you could divide the class into 6 groups of 5 kids each--3 USSR groups and 3 USA groups--paired against each other. (So you have USSR Group 1 against USA Group 1, USSR 2 against USA 2, and USSR 3 against USA 3.) Have five roles for each group (maybe like "leader", "intelligence service", "military", "politicians", and "civilians" or something) and let the kids in each group pick which role they want. Then they try to work together--yet with their own interests--to "beat" the opposing team.

The tricky part would be deciding on objectives, and thus scoring points and having a "winner" in each matchup and for the overall class. Each role should probably have a primary objective (and some could be shared among multiple roles). Maybe it would be easiest to take a handful of events--like the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Space Race, military buildup, nuclear/technology development, etc.) and have them pick a couple to work through.

Hope this is somewhat helpful rather than further muddying the waters. How much time do you have to get this ready?

Check out Lasting Alliances, The Road Ahead, and Ages of Middle-earth, three of my five dream card sets that make up Wars of the Ring. Oh, and I have a trade list now!

Also, if you're into DCs or RPGs (or even if you're not!), check out Realms of Middle-earth, the sequel to CG's "DC Adventure", Realms of the North!

I’m thinking of three majore incidents:
1. Conference of Jalta all the way to the blockade of Berlin
2. Invasion of Pigs Bay and Cuba Crisis
3. Built of the Berlin Wall

I want to provide them with dossiers, in which they can find certain information. The hard point is: how to work from there.....

For espionage, perhaps spies have to sort through the envelope of "three truths and a lie." Or else "three lies and a truth." Or something like that?
Never kid about politicians. The more bizarre the joke, the more likely it is to come true.

Okay, here is an update:

If I have these groups matched up against eachother I have the following situation. I will give each group information top start with. The starting situation. Then they will have to deal with it on certain different levels.

Diplomacy: work on a solution in front of the entire world. You have to be patient, friendly and firm. Don’t piss the opponent off, and don’t be weak in front of your own nation.

Spy: Look at your real obejectives and try to maneuver the situation in a secret way in your advantage

Warmongery (is that the right word?): try to put pressure on the opponent without forcing them to anwser with violence.

The members of each group have to work together, but also individual, for otherwise the task will be to big....Any thoughts about this? Please join me in thinking!!!!

Those three "factions" all seem good, though I think you could simply call the last one "Military". But you’re on the right track, for sure.

How much longer until you need to start this? I’d focus on scenarios to present to them now.

We’re going to start at the end of this week. At this moment I’m searching for real characters that played a role in the different scenarios. For the Berlin Wall I have at the East: Chroesjtsjov, Walter Ullbricht -leader of East Germany-, Markus Wolf -leader of the intelligence- and I have to add another 2 to these. Then the same for the Western side. I will devide the pupils and give them a character. When given, the first thing they have to do is to work out their character. They will have to complete it into a dossier and hand it over to me. This will be the first task. The team that has the best dossier wins this assignment....then we have to continue....
