Wow. We might not agree, AD, but that was one of the best counter-responses I’ve ever seen. I hope you didn’t copy/paste from somewhere! |
Riddle 9
When I came to Abraham I let him live just a moment longer. When I came to Moses I saved his life more than once. But the salmon... I regret to say I had a hand in its death.

Hey, like I said, I understand the reaction. But I personally think that this particular word is not that bad. There’s nothing inherently wrong with this one, other than "it’s bad." Why is it bad? Just because it is.
Again, from what I can see, it’s also rapidly losing that status. Normally such changes take at least a few generations. This one’s going in a lot less than that. Why? Again, because there’s no inherent moral problem with referring to the posterior portion of a person, (how’s that for alliteration? ) second, because it has a commonly recognized non-bad denotation.
Now certain other words have inherent moral problems with flippant or other particular usage; to flippantly condemn (<-- notice the etymology there... "con" = "with", "demn" =....) someone is a moral flaw. Hence that usage of the word is bad. Serious, sober usage is not necessarily bad. Some carry an inherent connotation (F*) which results in them being bad.
I realize, of course, that people will disagree. So I figure, don’t use the donkey term for two reasons. 1 It’s bad (in the US, so doesn’t apply directly to Lem0n) 2 Others disagree (does apply to Lem0n, because he’s in contact with those disagreeing.)
These two points are, of course, over-simplifying the matter. Habits of speech, etc. get involved as well.
Of course, NB, that’s your parents’ decision to make. I would disagree on this particular word, and the fact that it’s not literally everywhere on here; just shows up every now and then, mostly in Lem0n’s posts. Based on my logic (which you are free to disagree with) it’s an overreaction TO THIS PARTICULAR WORD. But I understand the argument against it being an overreaction.
For another example, I say "bloody" on here occasionally. No big deal. Why? Because first, there’s nothing inherently wrong with the term or its connotations (that I’m aware of, anyways), so I’m not doing anything wrong inherently by using the term; it’s no morally worse in American than "dang" or "darn." Second, none of our European friends seem bothered by it, therefore I am not doing something wrong by offending them. Our American friends don’t care, because it’s not a "bad word" to them. If anyone were to PM me (or just straight post) and ask me to stop, I would, but I really don’t think there’s a problem.
Again, on lots of other words, I would completely agree with you. On this one, while I agree that Lem0n ought to consider, let us say... reducing his use of the term (how’s that for a noncommittal statement?) but I disagree about the severity of it. And there’s always the possibility that I am wrong.

Gees you have to go and make a short rabble of an arguement into a proper serious full debate dont you?! "Darn" you and your debate skills AD, go sit on your "donkey" and eat chocolate I loved that summary to the previous page post. Puts things into perspective
Look its very simple NB doesnt like the word and AP has jumped on the bandwagon as the all powerful mod, thats not my fault, if i said i dont like the word spam i doubt everyone would stop using it and just because im told @55 is a bad word doesnt mean it is, so why do i have to take 2 peoples word for it (Especially as ive had more people back me up than attack me)? I know F is a bad word without needing an explanation that is half a page long on what a bad word is and so I wouldnt use it here. I, however, find it ridiculous in 2008 that someone’s parents wont let their child use a lotr forum because one guy posted one message that said "big a** minion". (Gees i cant believe I starred that out). I didn’t even mean it had a large bum. Its just a harmless phrase.
And your first comment to start this off NB was "havent you learned in America youre swearing". Well no frankly, I’ve no idea what youre gonna tell me is swearing next in your little "baby" world. You moaned at me for damn so ive started saying darn even though we dont even have this word in England really. You never thank me for that even when its my choice, i could have carried on, instead you criticise me for saying something else petty.

Whoa what’s happening here? I’ve been gone a while...
The Jewish believe it’s horribly wrong to swear/curse in Hebrew, so they do it in Arabic!
And to people here saying that some curse words are losing their "badness", that isn’t really true. Technically the word still retains its original meaning, but the culture using it is increasingly more "depraved", if you will.
As for me I keep a really clean mouth, not even resorting to English cussing methods.
EDIT: AD: Yes! that’s exactly true, what you said about the connotation itself counting. But one thing: If I have the slightest tinge of malice when I say the word "applesauce" does it make it a curse-word? Connotation... |
My Trading List
Popcorn is not gooey like fat, and also not crunchy like potato chips, but crispy like lettuce which makes it a healthy snack. |

CBB: No, but yes. Good luck finding a way to give "applesauce" an inherent connotation bad enough to pass beyond "angry" into "bad word". I suppose it might be possible, but.... |
