Would the Witch-king had killed Gandalf if Rohan's armies had not arrived?

It’s so interesting because really neither could defeat the other. I for one thought Gandalf fighting the Balrog is by far one of the best film duels ever, heh. When I first saw it in theaters, I was ... yeah, like that, lol. |

| Oh yeah. On a side note, doesn’t the scene at the Great Gate have interesting parallels with the Khazad-Dum Bridge scene? (namely Gandalf’s defiance: "Go back to the abyss!") |

Gandalf may not have been able to be killed, but neither would the Witch-King be able to be killed. I actually think that the Witch-King would win if they fought on a normal field, but the hand of greater powers were in play, and somthing would happen that would hinder the Witch-King’s motives. Such as Gwahir arriving or somthing.
The Valar would not let Gandalf lose is what I’m saying. |

I think it all depends on whether this debate is on the movies, or the books. Now, it sounds as if in the books, Gandalf’s staff was not broken, in the movies it was. Without his staff, no matter how powerful he was, the witch King could have killed him I believe. I mean, Gandalf still had a body that could be pierced by a sword, right? But I think it is an interesting thought that if he was killed, he may have come back even more powerful.
I have an interesting question that may be debatable. I don’t know if there was anything about it in the books, but had Sarumaun died and returned? I mean, it seems that he’s awfully powerful, and he’s white. But then, if he was a died and risen Sarumaun, (sarumaun the white), he was killed by Grima, remember? So wouldn’t that in turn follow that Gandalf could be killed as well? |

No, Saruman was "the White" because he was the strongest of the 5 wizards when they arrived in the Grey Havens. Saruman may have been far more powerful, but Gandalf was known as the wisest. When Gandalf was sent back because his "Task was not done" he came back as the powerful wizard that we know in the 2nd and 3rd movies. Saruman then was left with no more power.
But, as I was saying before, if the Balrog couldn’t "kill" Gandalf (I know he did, but Gandalf was sent back by the Valar), then The Witch-King could not interfere with the plans of the Valar, and so he would have been defeated...somehow. |

Anonymous Prodigy wrote: Very true, Pipsqueak, but the Witch-king’s power waxed greatly as the WotR progressed, so let us assume that the Witch-king’s power doubled or so, and Gandalf would have a more hard time defeating him. But the again, Gandalf CANNOT be defeated by ANYONE as Gandalf the White, so it doesn’t really matter.
were you talking to me? because Pipsqueak hasn’t posted anything on the topic yet. |

I found another one! I think Gandalf would have won because he’s Gandalf. The witchy was a man before he became a wraith, but Gandalf was a maiar or something like that. Gandalf had powers that he wasn’t allowed to use, but even with that restriction I’m pretty sure that he would of obliterated the nazgul. |

| Olorin...he was a Maia...he could have taken the Witch-King every day..hands down! Eventhough his strength wasn’t in battle and just because he was true to his mission the Witch King was lucky..... |
