I expect that they could never have engaged in a duel to the death.
Sure, Gandalf fits the category of "No Man," being an incarnate Maia, but it’s pretty obvious that Eowyn was "meant" to kill the WK, and in order for the Freeps to survive, Gandy was "meant" to live.
Then, if the Rohirrim hadn’t arrived, something else would have prevented the duel (ie, the Fell Beast gets indigestion and flies off? I dunno....). The characters keep some degree of "free will" (at least, within the framework of their own literary world...) and yet the "fate" aspect still exists in that their choices may have consequences, but the end results are basically the same.
I expect Illuvatar/the Valar would have pulled just enough strings to keep everything basically in line, though with potential variations.
And Grima could kill Saruman, because he was incarnate. In the books, after his "corporeal death" a cloud-ish thingy rises, and tries to go west, but gets blown away. The Valar rejecting Saruman, thus "killing" the Saruman-Maia.

Quite right, quite right. I agree with you on this, and that’s a pretty interesting tidbit on grima and sauruman....I never saw that before.  |
