I’d love to learn about all that stuff, but all we have here in Indiana is Karate. Well, mostly. But even karate has sooooo many different styles that officials can argue for hours about how to perform a certain punch or kick. I’m in Shorenryu-Shorenkan or something like that, I’m not taking the time to look up the hyphenation or spelling right now... yah, I’m a lazy black belt, figure that one out.

I wanna be a ninja!

Sorry for this double post
Well there’s several styles on Kung fu or Gong fu. The meaning is something like "ability through the effort".
There’s styles that focus competition and exibition like WUSHU.
Kung fu have the many styles based in animals: The tiger, Monkey, Crane, Praying Mantis and serpent or snake (my best).

The 3 headline styles :

Choy Li Fut - Pure and huge wushu style and the only wushu style that I do until today. The most powerfull wushu style too.

Tai Chi Chuan - Not so strong as Choy Li Fut but a very effective style. One of the three orthodox "internal" styles of Chinese martial art (the other two being Hsing Yi Ch’uan and Pa Kua Chang FM).

Wing Chun - Very popular style. Not perfect and lost most of its strengh when lost the obscure text last century.

I have a Dai Katana, a gift from a old love o’mine from Japan and I it was made my old shigen...

I’m also practise the North style:
changquan (that means "hands free")
Sword
And the South style:
nangquan (I don’t remember if it write this way, but means "hands free" too)

Jiu-jitsu is kindda like Ju-do BUT jui-jitsu is a lot more powerfull. Altought what almost everyone think jiu-jitsu came from India not from Japan and the meaning is "Cradle of all martial arts". There’s many styles in Jiu-jitsu is kindda boring list all the styles and all then were very, very similar.
So And practise Bushido the mainlife of Kenjutsu so I can’t do Ninjutsu.

TO GLAMDRING: My favorite is Kung fu, but I love Kenjutsu ( but this is something about my old girl...things from heart Wink )

so what makes each so different? do they have different moves? is one faster than another? how are they marked? tiger strait in and then start tairing apart? snake a quick stab? different things like that.

They copy those animals then the moves and tecnics focus in different thing.
Example, Praying Mantis and Crane. This 2 are very, very directed to self defence.
The tiger have many impact moves based on strenght and the snake ( Mr. Green ) focus in concise and deadly little moves.

The main difference is the school or institute of Kung Fu (or Wushu) that you choose to learn. Cause in China there’s several different styles cause each school have a different...point of view of each style and when the firts Kung Fu - Wushu fighters came to ocident, they had brought this tradition with them. I mean if both of us are specialist in monkey, BUT we had trained in different schools (or institutes) our styles of fight can be completely different, I can based my moves on strangulation and you can use your legs to make serious damage to my chest for example. But we are still using monkey.

Hope this help, IF NOT, keep asking and I have pleasure to answer, ok?
Wink
