| What does that gold pile mean? And what do you get with the "award a gp" button? How do I get gp awarded, being new? |

| Wehn you hit award GP then it gives a GP to that particular user. GP is used to buy things in the forum shops like a signature and and avatar and all kinds of other kool stuff. |

I got a lot of them from writing LOTR articles - getting a 5 rating gives me 2 GP, and a 4 rating gives me 1 GP. |

Yes, writing articles can get you some gp, or get it taken away!

Why does it matter if you say they got a GP?
I often do that when people answer my questions ie gameplay questions.
I find it helpful to know how I got gp.
