| Many worry about running out natural resources, such as oil or coal. Which option would be the best replacement? |

Possibly Hydrogen, but the scientists will probably worry about it when they reach that challenge.... |

Nuclear power strikes me as the way to go. We now have reactors which are incredibly safer, and cleaner then ever before. The only drawback currently is that we don’t have any method for breaking down the waste, but compared to the massive amount of pollution and waste generated by coal or oil burning, nuclear power is incredibly clean. Hydroelectric/Solar/Wind is also a pretty good option, Hydroelectric plants in particular seem like a great idea that is also already up and running. Solar power still needs quite a bit of work to be viable on a grand scale, same for wind. both Methane Gas and Hydrogen still need some work to be better.
And since I am in Iowa, ethanol made from corn or other plants materials is a great source of fuel! E-85 is pretty cheap around here and having ethanol replace at least 15% of oil is common around here. |

As for me, I’d like to see a lot more things running off of solar power.

IMO in a few years nuclear power (which i voted) won’t be concentrated around breaking the atom, but rather uniting it, and thus much efficient since this procedure is considered to be more productive in terms of energy. Forgive my poor english for not knowing the exact words... |

| I think wind is good, we have accually considered putting up a wind turbine in our backyard, it costs about 50-60 grand, and it can generate enough electricity to power our house, plus, we could sell the extra to the power grid and make some bling, about a 20-30 year payoff period, and it only works in open areas, like in the middle of a cornfield in Iowa. |

I’m thinking anything that is a renewable resource. I’m somewhat against Hydro as dams have a tendency to really destroy existing ecosystems, but if the dam was already planned for other reasons and Hydro is a viable option for that dam, then put it in!
Fusion could be considered a renewable resource, as could things like ethanol, but they have their limitations and expenses.
The biggest issue I see with renewable energy sources is that their cost of operation is much more than the current energy options, so they won’t gain widespread acceptance until they are competitive cost-wise. |

I think that’s what corvus was talking about. As far as I’m aware, the only currently operating source of ’fusion energy’ is in the sun itself, because of the EXTREME temperatures involved, which are just about impossible on Earth, and if it was possible, it would be WAY too expensive.
Then there’s ’cold fusion’, but no one’s really accomplished that yet...
Forgive me if I’ve made any errors, I’m not exactly an expert on the subject.
Personally, I think that ethanol should be a more widespread energy source, because we can produce it, and a lot of it, for relatively cheap prices. I think it should be put into production more, at least until we can find a better alternative (like making hydrogen work). |
