again, I don’t think you have to make a choise here. Freedom is to be vallued, but some people tend to make a huge difference between liberalism and socialism and I really do believe that with true freedom comes socialism. Because if all people are equal, as stated in the Declaration of Independense (1776) (I know a bit of your history Laughing ), all people should have equal rights. And because not all people have equal capacities, we should help those with less. That is, as I believe, socialism. And that is the heart of the gospel. Reaching out to others..

I see you are from eastern Netherlands. Does that mean that you are one of the few people that live above sea lvl?

sadly, without our protection I would live underneath sealevel. East is relative BTW, because my country is only 200 kilometers (140 miles) wide. If it even stretches that far Laughing But yes, there are only a few people who live above sealevel. For instance: the economic heart of the Netherlands: Amsterdam/Rotterdam is lying mostly beneath sealevel. North from Amsterdam is the lowest point of the Netherlands. Over 6 meters beneath sealevel.......

So how does your dike system work? I remember that in your history, during the Wars of Religion, one of the tactics against the Spanish was cutting the dikes, and I always wondered why the whole country didn’t go underwater...

And if the whole country is under sea-level, and the lowest point is only around 20ft under sea-level (1 meter = little over 3 feet), then I take it that your country is pretty flat?

Our lowest point is Death Valley, CA which is 282 ft below sea level. Our highest point is Mt McKinley, 20,320 ft above sea level. So we have a really crazy geography in the US.

Yeah, but Alaska is so... un-U.S.-ish in terms of geography. What’s the highest point in the lower 48? What’s the volcano in Washington? Whitney? Help me out here.
I had to put something here.

The Netherlands with dikes:

Our country without them:

In early days the Romans pitied us for beeing such misirable people. We lived on aritficial hills, just waiting for the sea to leave. Later people conected these hills by dikes and the noticed the land in between got dry. This. was the start of expanding our own country. Land was won from the sea.
In the 1500 ingeneers invented a ingenious system on winning land by pumping dry whole lakes. A dike was built and all water was removed. The lower they came, the harder it was to pump the water away. The then built another dike, put a mill on top of it and they pumped further in stages. This was large amounts of land was added to our country.
What you mentioned was a defensive line in the middle of the Netherlands which could be flooded so an invading army would face difficulties marching on. This way it was easier to defend our main state: Holland. In those days we also had a republic -as mentioned before- founded by 7 different states. These were very independent and only in times of trouble they would collaborate. Did you know that Friesland, one of the 7 states, was one of the first ’countries’ to ever regonize the US? A lot of people from Friesland eventualy moved to the US, for example Menno Siemons, the founding father of the mennoniets....
We’ve got a reasonable flat country, especially the parts that would be flooded without dikes. The rest varies in hight between 200 feet above sealevel and in the south almost 1000 feet above sealevel. We are densely populated, like 450 people per square 3000 feet. So our geography is mainly dominated by men. But it is a beautiful country with rare places of rest and quietness....

When discussing America, it is important to remember that saying "American" is like saying human. There is an immense range of opinions, beliefs, and lifestyles that fit under that term. (Compare psycosick to NBarden) As a result, it is nearly impossible to characterize the "average" American. On the environment, for instance, here is just a sampling of opinions. All of these are held by large numbers of people.
1. The problem doesn’t exist.
2. There is a problem, but humans didn’t cause it and can’t do anything about it.
3. There is a problem, but fixing it would cost to much or wouldn’t be worth the side effects.
4. There is a problem, and we must fix it at all costs.
