I think most of you guys are Americans. I’m really wondering what you’re like. You might think: huh? What is this dude talking about? Well I mean this. Because I’m from the Netherlands, we seem to get little real information about America. Let me outline the general view I’ve got about the US.
-Americans are extremely proud about their history/country.
-Huge difference between poor and rich.
-Those that don’t have money have few possibilities to attend an education.
-Government doesn’t really do much about internal issues (the mess after Katrina was all over the news and esspecialy how long it took before something happened), the high number of poor people, the high number of people who cannot read or write (remember, this is the image I get by watching certain thing shown at TV, I’m not saying this is actually true)
-Insurance is expensive and without a good insurance they don’t offer good healthcare...meaning people suffer a serious healtrisc.
-What you have is what you are, meaning people are driven by the need to own as much as possible, the newest cars and so on.
-people don’t care much about evironment, US didn’t rectify Kyoto for example. If something is said about evironment it is experienced as nonsens from people from the left.
-If the word socialism is used everyone is almost scared of a communism invasion.

Alltogether I’ve got a rather negative image from the US. Again, I’m not saying this should be the truth, this is an image I’m getting. And I’m not trying to offend people if they agree on some things I’ve written above, but I would surely like to discuss certain things.
If somehow people don’t understand what I mean, please say so, because this is not ment to offend people, I just want ordinary American people to share their thoughts concerning this subject with me! Very Happy

yes

-Huge difference between poor and rich.

no. well... a little but not huge

-Those that don’t have money have few possibilities to attend an education.

um no, you have a free pubilc school education until 9th grade

-Government doesn’t really do much about internal issues (the mess after Katrina was all over the news and esspecialy how long it took before something happened), the high number of poor people, the high number of people who cannot read or write (remember, this is the image I get by watching certain thing shown at TV, I’m not saying this is actually true)

that’s weird, i always thought that they did to much

-Insurance is expensive and without a good insurance they don’t offer good healthcare...meaning people suffer a serious healtrisc.

yes

-What you have is what you are, meaning people are driven by the need to own as much as possible, the newest cars and so on.

yes, unless you’re a christian (like me)

-people don’t care much about evironment, US didn’t rectify Kyoto for example. If something is said about evironment it is experienced as nonsens from people from the left.

Republicans = a little care for enviorment
Democrats = too much care for the enviorment, so much in fact, they would rather kill an unborn child then chop down a tree

-If the word socialism is used everyone is almost scared of a communism invasion.

im not is anyone else?

helpfull in the sense I know now we are brothers in faith! And that is always great to find out...but 9th grade, what age do you have? I mean if you want to be -let’s say - a nurse and you don’t have the money, can you become a nurse?
And where does this pride comes from?
And in return, if someone has an idea of the Netherlands, what kind of idea do you have?.....

I disagree (not on it being a touchy subject, though), as there are a number of other things that have come up that could probably be defined as that, but if a mod finds this to be offensive and deletes/locks it, then we will know to avoid this issue.

So THAT’S where elves are!

As for what i’d disagree on (or have a comment for)?

Huge difference between poor and rich? What type of difference? I mean, as people, no not really. I know (of) very generous and very nice rich people and rather crazy poor (and the other way around). Monetary wise, yeah, I’ve been told at least that it’s a pretty large gap between the two...

Education? I’m not completely sure, as I haven’t been affected too much personally with it, but there are quite a few opportunities and programs to help you pay for it if you can’t normally.
As for education beyond the general... Well, it would probably be difficult to do. But, I mean, it might be possible that you work in something related and depending on the company, might pay to get you the training to take a more advanced job. Generally that’s for advancing past an advanced level, though... (if that made any sense)

Internal issues - I think they do try, and for some things they do too much, others too little. Of course, if they do a decent job, you’ll only get the problems or the impressive parts out of it (in general). So, it’ll look better or worse than it actually is.

For the environment - tough thing... Without getting parties involved, as that opens a whole can of... well, worms, but more like jumping worms that can glide through the air.
Anyway, as far as I can tell, we’re figuring out that something is changing in the environment and the major change recently has been us. So, we figure it could very likely be us causing the problem - which means we need to work at improving it.
Unfortunately, people aren’t sure if it is us causing the problem, or if there even is a problem in the first place. By that, I mean people disagree on those. Combine with a somewhat stubborn mindset (which I believe everyone has), so the people who are out talking about it are sure they are right, and you can get a problem.
Our time here is ending...

What did you want to see before the end?
It will be made in the Request-a-card Set #1 (name ideas also welcome Smile).

Yes, remember that we were one of the first "real" republics after say the Romans, and yes I for one am proud of my country.

gil-estel wrote:

Ever heard of a middle class? Seriously though the vast majority of americans are not poor or rich, and even the so-called "poor" tend to be much richer then most of the worlds poor are, for example among americans with an annual income of $20,000 roughly 90% have cable TV, 80% have a computer with internet access just to give a few figures..yes there are some very rich people in america, but the vast majority of them got it by working hard not through inheritance.

So what if there is a difference? I see no problem with having some very rich people, there is nothing wrong with rightfully earned wealth.

gil-estel wrote:

VERY WRONG!!! Those who have little money tend to have the MOST $$$ spent on them, low-income students get $1,000s spent the get them at least through 9th grade...for example I am homeschooled, but dual-enrolled at the local High School for just one class. That high school gets $4,000 for me being there, and that extra is spent usually on the "poor" students, I don’t get any of that excess, and trust me, my woods class is NOT costing the high school $4,000.

Meaning????? Yes Katrina was a mess, mostly because there mayor and the governor weren’t on top of their job, and refused Federal aid before the Hurricane hit, yes it was a major F*** up.

Insurance isn’t that explensive if you aren’t a smoker and don’t do drugs.
Besides those people who aren’t prepared health care wise get Medicaid or Medicare (socialist programs that are a huge waste of $$$ IMHO)

Yes but materilism is not just an American thing, for gods sake.
People everywhere are driven to own as much as possible, it isn’t just a US thing.
BUt sadly a lot of americans are wrapped up in owning as much stuff as possible and ignoring the things that really matter.

Listen, Global Warming is one of the least of the worlds problem at this time, and it isn’t something that US $$$ should be spent on.
And yes it is nonsense, for example there was a quote that the sea-level would rise by 3 feet by 2020, now it has been quietly reduced to about 6 inches.
Big difference there buddy.
