so, does anyone here make bows? bowmaking is sort of my new hobbie. i just finished one. the trick is getting the right wood. Cedar limbs and saplings work great. really anything in the cedar family works well, yew, cyprus, etc. i’ve heard that hickory and orange trees work well also.

All I know is to get a good young stick, and bend it to your specifications.

I prefere airsofting.

Hmm...I think using bows would be cool, does that count?

I made several bows out of all kinds of wood. I found that around here young pine trees stripped down work best for the bow.

I made one at a college survival course and we almost killed a squirrel with it. I got within 10 yards from about 5 deer, but I didnt want to shoot at it. The proffessor laughed at me when I told him about the bow and when I showed it to him he was surprised to see it had around 40lbs of pull on it. He shot an arrow at least 100 feet into the air and watched it stick 3 inches into the ground about 200 feet away.

My friend (anyone remember willturner2 from awhile back on the D boards?) had one that he made that was about two and a half feet tall, and could easily sink crummy little homemade arrows three or four inches into trees from about 30 or 40 yards. That little thing was absolutely insane. If I remember right -- and I probably don’t -- it was made of young crabapple.

Then some sort of dispute arose over it, due to a cranky neighbor complaining about him using it, and he figured it would be easer just to get rid of it than argue it all out with the police. Rolling Eyes He tired making more like it afterwards, but they were all pretty pathetic.
Never kid about politicians. The more bizarre the joke, the more likely it is to come true.

i’ve killed a rabbit with may first bow, which was basicly the same as my new one. i’ve never found pine trees to work that well, they always seemed too flimsy, but i’ll have to give it a try.

I tried making one out of a random stick when I was younger.

Though, i’ve heard the trick is to polish it with a rock... makes it stronger or something. Takes a looong time tho :/

methinks deer intestines would work better to make it stronger...
