I need to join a group like this, but I’m afraid that my addiction is Pepsi. But don’t worry, man, I know what you’re going through.
Pepsi in the morning, Pepsi in the evening, Pepsi at suppertime, when Pepsi’s on the menu, you can have Pepsi anytime!
P.S. Your Scottish accent in Elf Lvr’s thread was great! Just one word slightly off (kin should be ken), how did you pick up Scots? |

I read a book done all in Scottish lingo. There was a sort of translation guide at the back. Otherwise, I’d have been totally clueless as to what stuff like "ken" meant. But at least I remember enough to know what MM was saying.
And I am a Mountain Dew Addict. Whenever I can have it, I do.
Hey, this isn’t very annonymous, by the way! |

I think that I would be a Mountain Dew addict, if I could get it here in Scotland. Whenever we visit the States, I take full advantage of being able to get it (oh, and Ding Dongs, and beef jerky, no, I’m not fat). MD gives such a greater caffeine rush than other drinks. But being here, it has to be Pepsi.
And yes, Scots, when my family from the States visits me here, I have to translate for them. It’s funny, my 2 daughters are both Americans by birth, but they walk around saying things like, "Gonnae don dae tha," and "Dinnae ken." |

yeah, the anti-anonymous is part of the funny.
i picked up scottish from an great old movie called kiddnapped. it’s about a jackobite and a lowlander running from king george’s men, and it is absolutely wonderful.
"and david balfore did have sons, and they were niether highlander nor lowlander, they were SCOTS!!" |

oh, and right now i am awake because of Mt. Dew. it is 3:00 AM here in the old dominion. and i am usually quite asleep by now.
and beef jerky is my favorite.
also, here in virginia there is a park where i live named Caladon, named for Calidonia, the old name for scotland. when the scots came over it reminded them of scotland. so whenever i go there, i always practice my scottish.
a question, is the phrase: ack weel (or something like that) used at all in scotland? |

Yes, it is! Where I live, in Edinburgh, it’s more (mair) like och, weel. But if you travel to different parts of Scotland, the accent changes slightly. The Highlands would be more like ach weel.
There are Scots here in Edinburgh who complain that the Borders Scots speak strangely, and they’re only an hour’s drive away! I find that funny, because in the States, you have to travel many hundreds of miles for an accent change. |

not where i live. an hour drive east would bring me to a new dialect. it’s down the norther neck, the penisula between the patomac and rappohannok rivers.
i always use that phase "ach weel". constantly. i love the highlands.
my heart is in the highlands. i want to visit scotland, and ireland, someday. |

You should, it’s well worth it. Glen Coe is magnificent. And you can’t go anywhere without seeing a castle (many in ruins, many intact).
Scotsmen don’t wear kilts on a regular basis these days. Kilts are usually only worn at special occassions. That’s why I love going to weddings and Highland games!
When I came over, a Scotsman asked me what Americans thought of Scots. He thought that I was going to say something like, "They wear kilts and play bagpipes." He was prepared to say, "No, they dinnae (don’t)!"
I thought of Wullie on The Simpsons and said, "Americans think that Scots get drunk and get into fights."
He thought for a moment and said, "Aye, ye’re right."
Oh, and I love MD, when I can get it, and Pepsi! Trying to stay on topic. |
