I was wondering if any of you guys, were/are in concert band at school. If you are, say what instrument you play.
I am in the 5th grade band and play euphonium (miniature tuba is looks, trombone in sounds) One of my friends is second chair which is nice. And we both went to SCIBA (South Central Iowa Bandmasters Association) auditions and made it. So honor band is today, which is why I am on so early cause I won’t have another chance .
So fire away. |

| By the end of high school I’d gotten first trumpet. Of course there were only three of us who played it in the whole school but all the same it was a proud achievement. |

| i used to play mallets, but i have no hand eye coordination, so i now play the ’toys’. i play things like - sleigh bells, tamborine, bass drum, timpany, suspended symbol, crash symbol, triangle, wood block....things like that. basically everything but snare... wait, you say you play in 5th grade band? how does that work? |

I was about to say, sop comes off as a LOT older than 5th grade (at LEAST 6th grade! ).
I played trumpet from 5th grade through senior year, and dabbled in a bit since then (I was in the band corp in the Air Force, where I was the best player).
I enjoyed it, for the most part. One of the few places people were allowed to be creative, and it was full of smart kids. |

I get confused with my grade. I am doing geometry, take ITBS as a ninth grader, I am doing a 7th grade english curriculum...its complicated.
I am "an 8th grader" though. Since I got first chair, I get to go to IBA! (iowa bandmasters association) |

I was in bands of some kind from 6th grade through my first year of college, and actually have my high school band to directly thank for being married now. True story....
I was a percussionist, starting with the simple stuff like cymbals and bass drum in middle school and then moving steadily up through high school to squad leader playing the "top" instruments (timpani and chimes) by my senior year. We had concert band in the spring, but the REAL neat part was marching band in the fall. Ours was no oridnary concert band, but a competitive one...literally. It was the Annapolis Area Christian School Golden Eagles marching band, and we competed in the Tournament of Bands (the band shows up in their pages as "Annapolis Christian HS"). The four years I was in the band were probably, literally, the highlight activity of my life (besides my wedding, of course ). It was AWESOME in every way. During the years I was in the band, we got progressively higher scores each year, and I got to be part of the band’s first win at our Chapter Championships and our first invitiation to the Atlantic Coast Championships (kind of like the "playoffs" at the end of the fall for the top 25 bands).
My wife (who is five years older than me, and thus was in college at the time) was back each fall to help teach the band, since she had loved it so and was planning to be a music teacher once out of college. She was assigned to my section of the marching band: the "Pit", which is all the percussion instruments that is too cumbersome to march with, so we didn’t actually march. Instead we stand on the sidelines of the field and play in front of the band. Anyway....
We got to be good friends through that, and when I graduated high school, she and I led the Pit together for a few years before falling out of touch. When we ran back into each other a couple years later (ironically, at a marching band competition, the first time either of us had been to watch our band since we had co-taught the Pit), I was grown up and not the goofy little kid she had known. The rest is history. |
