Why do people say that?

A relationship along those lines, by definition, falls under the classification of a religion.
Sure, it may be a little different from "an institution based around a set of beliefs", but it’s still religion.

Did you know that many metaphors or idiomatic expressions are incorrect because they can’t happen in real life? Why ask a rhetorical question if you don’t want an answer?
