I’ve told quite a few stories about myself here, which should reflect just how open I am in this community. That says a lot, because generally I’m a pretty private person.
But tomorrow (or today for those of you on the east coast), I’m going to be deposed as the defendant in a million-dollar trial.
I know. That sounds like I’m joking. Unfortunately, I’m not.
Two years ago this past August I found myself in an incredibly unfavorable situation. I was driving to school and I had two friends with me. Britt, who I knew well - she was riding shotgun - and Zach sitting behind her, who I didn’t know so well. But I knew he was a smart guy and didn’t have a problem with him.
To cut right to it, he jumped out of the back seat while I was cruising at 35mph. That never seems too fast by car standards, but by people standards, it’s um, well, fast. He literally bounced off the pavement (and for those of you who don’t know, humans aren’t made to bounce. If you bounce, something’s very bad) and rolled for a ways.
I stopped the car and provided what first aid I could until paramedics arrived. He was at death’s door, and when he woke up from the coma almost a week later, he remembered nothing of the event. All he knew was that he was in a lot of pain.
I think a lot of this could have turned out better, but I seriously wound up becoming the victim of this horrible situation. The insurance company and the police (both of which completely believed my story, the one I’ve jut told) instructed me to stay out of Zach’s life, in order to allow his memory to recover on its own. His friends and family, in the absence of facts, jumped to the ridiculous conclusion that I was somehow responsible; that I tried to kill their son.
When he got out of the hospital some time later, I began to receive death threats. I started skipping out of school because I really didn’t feel safe there anymore. I felt like I was being stalked and I learned to grow eyes in the back of my head.
And then things went quiet. I heard nothing for so long. But this summer I got a letter in the mail saying I was being sued for a million dollars by Zach and his family. I was blown away. I mean, I helped save this guy’s life... and this is how they choose to repay me?
I had the option to counter-sue, which would have meant upwards to 3 million dollars if and when I won (because, let’s face it, I’ve got all the evidence, all the agencies agree with me, and yeah. I’ve been telling the truth the whole time and I have more than one eyewitness). But I chose to not counter-sue. Hopefully this will show my character to them. Hopefully this will let them see that I am not some deviant monster on some destructive path of murder.
Tomorrow is my deposition, and it’s a brand new place for me. I’ll be spending hours being more-or-less interrogated by lawyers and subjected to rigors I haven’t faced before. I know a lot of you are Godly folk, and I could seriously use some prayer support tonight and through tomorrow. It’s going to be one of the roughest days of my life.
Thanks for listening to me. Wish me luck. |

Wow.
...
That really sucks.
And remember that whatever happens, it wasn’t your fault. (Yeah, I know you know that, but I had to say it anyway.)
And do try to remember that, from his family’s POV, they gotta blame someone; it’s probably not easy for them, and you’re the natural target. Don’t take their anger too personally. I mean, sure, take it personally that you’re getting death threats (did you tell the cops about those?) but realize that they’ve gone through some major psychological trauma, too.
That really, really sucks!
Definitely will pray for you.
Good luck/God bless/hope everything comes out alright |

Do not look sideways when speaking, go mentally through the whole thing before going there, do not stutter when answering. Speak loud, clear and tell the facts in a comprehensive order of events. Always mention how much evidence you have to support each fact you’re describing (like "Then, as X, Y and Z can confirm, he simply jumped off", etc...), and BRING A LAWYER!
Then, if you still have time to do so, depending on how things go, DO counter-sue. Even if only to encourage them dropping the whole issue. |

F_M, from a lawyers perspective, counter-suing is the way to go. The problem is, countersuing only fixes the legal problem, which, being a lawyer, is what you’re looking at. But what about your reputation then? What about trying to make up with the family? What menace said about countersuing makes sense.
Menace, I’ll be praying for you. |

Ouch. Well if you have witnesses and all it doesn’t seem like you will lose, still nightmare to go through, plus all the lawyers fees and all that crud...
I will be praying |

Dude, he’s looking down the barrel of a million-dollar lawsuit! Counter-sue, close both cases, THEN go and try to make amends, this is nothing to go fooling around with. Also, with the bizarre legal system you guys have, odds are he might lose even with a handful of witnesses, so I wouldn’t risk. |

Throw one more "I’ll be praying for you" onto the pile. Wow.
I really WILL be praying, dude, today and tomorrow. Let us know what becomes of it.
And don’t blame Zach for what’s happening, because more than likely, his family is hurt by the pain their son went through and is lashing out at the easiest target: you. All it takes is a call to some sleazy lawyer with dollar signs for eyes and they start contemplating suing. Friggin’ lawyers.
Hang in there. This too shall pass. |

Actually, FM’s got a point there.
Having studied the tort system for debate one year, I wouldn’t be too sure about anything.
Granted, those were Medical "Malpractice" cases, but still....
(Hate to be the voice of doom, but I’m sorta cynical about certain things.) |
