Sometime this Summer a group of my friends and I plan to hit up many of the great sites the continent of Europe has to offer. Many of us have never been out of the United States before...and just wanted to get some feedback on where to go...and where to stay. We have just started researching flights, train passes and hostels/hotels to stay in, but thought I’d open it up to many of you who actually live in Europe yourself.
Also...if anyone would be willing to host us for maybe a day. We would pay you, of course, but it would be awesome if anyone would be willing to let us crash at their place for a night. I will vouch for all my friends, including myself, we are very respectful, humble and fun people. As an added incentive, I would be more than willing to bring any LOTR cards you might need as well as extra compensation for your generosity.
I have been trading for quite a while with people around the world, and hopefully some of you who’ve traded with me might find hosting a group of 25 year-old American guys as kind of a treat. I can assure you...we are the cream of America’s crop. We all play LOTR-TCG pretty heavily as well.
The big thing I’d like to know from you guys is if any of you have any good info on where we should visit or know of any good deals you guys might know of. Don’t forget about the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as well. Any feedback is extremely appreciated. Thanks.

Ah...a person who wants to experience the Ancient Europe! You’re most welcome! I don’t know where your personal interests are, but I’d say: go visit the main cities: Barcalona, Paris, Rome, London, Prague, St Petersburg...Beautiful cities, with loads of cultural, historical and beautiful sights. If you plan to come to Holland, you’re welcome to spend the night at my house, but I live in the upper north of this small country, so journy-wise speaking, I don’t think it’s worth the effort...The Netherland is a fun country to visit I guess, with lot’s of history and Friesland, a part of the country, was the first to recognise the USA. Also John Adams went to the Netherlands for money...we were the first to loan money to the USA...se we have some what of a connection!

I would definately recomend some of the ancient capitals such as London, Rome and Prague. Prague especially is absolutely beautiful, loads of really old buildings including a huuuuuge castle and cathedral. It also has some great recent history to explore as it was occupied by both the nazis and the soviets in the last century. Another area thats really good fun are the Alps. I would definately reccomend that you spend at least a few days in the Alps possibly whilst travveling from France to Italy. Another area thats great fun is the Black Forest in Germany, its pretty huge and spooky.

Well, I’m no European resident, but having just been to England and Norway over the summer:

Oslo is awesome, and London is pretty dang cool too....

If you go to England (not really the continent, but oh well):
There’s some tiny little village out west called "Nunney."
Go there. Cute little place, and the castle is really neat. A bit tiny, but still, neat. There’s a Bed-n-Breakfast somewhere in the area called "Copper Beeches" which is really nice, too. Stonehenge, Avebury, and the Westkennet Longbarrow are all within driving distance.

If you’re interested in history, Oslo has a TON of museums. IIRC, there’s at least 30, including a Viking Ship museum, a Thor Heyerdahl museum with the original Kon-Tiki raft, etc.
If you’re into hiking, the Nordmark forest is supposed to be a really good hike near Oslo.
There’s some famous ski-jump somewhere in Oslo, too.
Never kid about politicians. The more bizarre the joke, the more likely it is to come true.

After my 7-week cultural studies tour of Europe (a little over 10 years ago now) I would say my favorite places that I visited weren’t the major cities or generally the tourist traps, but some of the more out of the way areas:

Fussen, Bavaria
Loch Lomond, Scotland
Bibury, England
Saltsburg, Austria.

These are all great starting places for tours out into the country or a number of the larger cities if you would like (with the exception of Loch Lomond ). Great hiking and nature opportunities are all near by. I very much enjoyed staying in all of these areas. Particularly Fussen and Loch Lomond.

Thank you to all those who’ve responded so far. This will be a continuing post throughout the months as we get closer to our proposed date for the trip. Please feel free at any time to post any relevant information you’d like to pass on to me regarding this expedition of sorts. Gil-Estel, thank you very much for your hospitality. If we end up stopping in the Netherlands, which is certainly a possibility, we would love to meet you. Maybe we could get in a few LOTR games too while we were there. I’ll keep you posted, in particular. Thanks again to everybody, keep the info comin!

you’re most welcome and if you do come over to the Netherlands bring a deck as well! I could introduce you to some of my best friends who play as well! It would be an honor to have you over!
