This is getting interesting.

Question:

What would prompt a company to invest half a million dollars into Decipher, a company of 10 people that just lost its two remaining sources of revenue?

I’m serious... whatever this new game is... it’s gotta be big.

Okay, well...

We know:

1. It’s been in development for over a year.
2. It launches sometime 2008

Therefore:

It has to be something that’s been around long enough for them to have been working on it that long, and it is most likely something that will get some sort of boost late this year or sometime next year.

Oddly enough, that actually sounds like Narnia, though I still doubt it.

Or else it’s something entirely independent of a franchise, which seems unlikely, given Decipher’s history.

Yeah, I saw that earlier this week and thought well, that’s the death toll for Big D.

Now that I’ve seen what Menace posted...well, he may be right. This has GOT to be something big and famous for a company to invest in them NOW.

Still, I’m not sure if I trust the employees they have left, based on how LOTR TCG ended....

Check out Lasting Alliances, The Road Ahead, and Ages of Middle-earth, three of my five dream card sets that make up Wars of the Ring. Oh, and I have a trade list now!

Also, if you're into DCs or RPGs (or even if you're not!), check out Realms of Middle-earth, the sequel to CG's "DC Adventure", Realms of the North!

It isn’t Narnia. No, Narnia isn’t good enough to bring in what Decipher’s looking for; they want their old fans back, I’m sure, in addition to new blood. I, for one, don’t think Narnia is complicated enough a universe to survive Decipher’s application of strategic-depth of gaming that they’re known for.

It’s very likely that Decipher’s trying something proprietary again. Sure, Wars didn’t pan out, but that was a combination of stiff rules, broken cards, and a stale environment. Add to that the hole the industry was in at the time (which it’s just getting out of now), and we all got one dead game.

If Decipher is trying another proprietary license, you can bet it will be tagging along with a brand-new set of rules. No more SWCCG reflection. This, if I’m right, will be the "all inclusive" game the article I posted about spoke of: online gaming, physical gaming, and every plane of existence in-between.

And, as for Decipher’s employees, if this looks to be taking off, they’ll try and bring back the old teams. They were laid-off, after all, due to monetary losses and trouble staying afloat... not from conflict in-house.

Maybe I’m too optimistic here.

On another note, I just shot Warren Holland an email inquiring a bit into what’s coming up. I offered to help playtest, design, or whatever would be needed of me.

I hope he responds. He has in the past.

::EDIT:: So, it looks like his old email doesn’t work anymore. Shoot. I’ll try and find his new one.

]What I came up with:

Halo: Seems a bit late to jump aboard that train, but maybe.
ditto bu...look at the bottom of my post for what I think about halo

Narnia: [/b]Well, Prince Caspian looks pretty dang cool, but it seems IMO a little weak as something for a major TCG, and the movies too far apart.
too little to work on. movies definitly too far apart.

His Dark Materials: Same problem as Narnia. Seems too much of a gamble to try to make a major TCG out of it.
and the movie will be lucky to break even

Non-LOTR Tolkien, ie Hobbit, Silmarillion, Children of Hurin, etc.: Possible, if they get more liscences. Hobbit seems unlikely until there’s more certainty about if/when there will be a movie.
this COULD work. but they would have to bring back old designers to make sets people would actually buy

Halo so far is the only one I would bet my britches on. especially since I could imagine it having something to do with an X-box 360. maybe being able to play it on the Xbox 360. you could scan your cards or something IDK.

but I think halo could best incorporate the online/offline thing.

and seriously Halo 3 outgrossed most movies, there is still a market.

The problem with Halo is that Wizkids owns - at least - partial rights to the series through their HeroClix spin off, HaloClix.

That would make it difficult at best for Decipher to secure their own rights to the franchise. The more separate industries there are involved in the same license, the more expensive that license becomes to manage.

I don’t think Halo is it.

that is the problem, but of the ones AD mentioned, it seemed the most probable.

That...or they got caught up in D’s big-talk, which is also possible. The article itself says that the guy isn’t familiar with TCGs, that’s what makes me dubious. If he’s not familiar with TCGs, how does he know that this really is the next big thing?
