There are lots of things we can learn from Muslim law and Muslim values, but it all depends on which interpretation. The extremes are seriously against Western values, but most others are not.

You could not institute Shariah law in Britain no more than you could enforce illegalised abortion for the Roman Catholics or any elements of Jewish law. In fact, Judaism has a tradition of following the laws of the country you live in, but’s that’s because they’ve been in exile for nearly 2000 years and had to adapt. The Muslims haven’t been away from Muslim lands for long enough to have developed such concepts, but it would still be impossible to implement.

As for those people calling the Archbishop to step down, it was a stupid and ill-thought-through statement, but everyone makes mistakes. He misjudged what he was saying, fair enough, get over it!

Muslims in extremity ultimately want a muslim world, so this is not surprising.

He was a numpty for opening his big mouth, that was a fartarded thing to say. From his position he couldnt have said a more controversial statement. It would be like Bush admitting the war was a bad idea and that he actually LIKES terrorism.

Thran: "get over it"? It wasnt like he accidentally babbled it out on the spur of the moment he clearly thinks that and made sure he told everyone. Thats not a mistake, thats being a tool. He deserves whatever happens to him. Bet no muslim leaders are saying lets introduce Roman Catholic ideals into the middle east.

In all fairness, so do some branches of Christianity.

However, the Bible doesn’t advocate killing anyone who disagrees with us like the Koran does.

Plus, extremist sects like that are not common. Every religion has a small group of whackos. With the muslim’s, though, its a very widely accepted doctrinal position.

Just as an example, what about the Amalekites in the Old Testament? The Bible COMMANDS that we kill ALL members of the tribe of Amalek. More than that, in Kings Saul loses his throne because he showed pity and DIDN’T wipe out all the Amalekite women and children like God told him to. So don’t tell me the Bible doesn’t advocate killing - it’s just had longer for the violence to be interpreted away into other forms (like eye for an eye etc. is understood by Jews to mean monetary compensation). Remember that Islam was born out of war and conflict and has only been around for just over 1000 years while the earliest parts of the Bible are many thousands of years older.

As for the minority point, until VERY recently, it was the generally accepted Christian view that non-Christians should be forcibly converted so that they wouldn’t go to Hell. It’s not as rare today as you might think.

t first I was totally outraged but after hearing his explanation today when he addressed the general synod I am slightly less angry. What he said was taken waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy out of context. The papers of course made no mention of the fact that he said that of course nothing which went against the rights and freedoms already garunteed under British law should be allowed.

However it was still an incredibly stupid thing to say. He seems generally surprised by the reaction this has recieved and as the head of the Anglican church he should know better. He should have an awareness of the political situation. I have never liked Dr Williams as I have never seen him as much of a leader, he is an academic at heart and should have stayed in that field of Christianity. Not that I ever really take much notice of him. I belong to a group of charismatic christian churches called New Frontiers International which is totally seperate from the COE thank goodness. The COE is a mess.

P.S Are any of you christian guys fans of Mark Driscoll? He is the main speaker at our summer conference and I can’t wait.

its just they like to go about it in different ways.

As i read in a book (not the belowmentioned one), The Muslim’s "converted" the middle east, and large chunks of North africa and southern europe in 100 years. You don’t do that by passing out flyers and singing Kumbiya.

If you can find it, Read Secrets of the Koran by...never can remember the author Wink
