Just in case you’re wondering, the title actually conveys what this thread is about: Laughing

DISCLAIMER: some of this recollection is a bit exaggerated.

Anyways, yesterday my dad got me up about 4:00 am in the morning, headed to the airport and got plenty early for the flight. Wait...darn you have to go through security, don’t you, in order to fly in a plane? hehe.

First off everything was going pretty, normal, we arrived at security and began taking off shoes, belts, watches, anything metal. My bags went through the x-ray just fine. But then, a security guard came over and said, "I need to look in your bag." He sifted through the contents(really there were only books and a water bottle, and was muttering to himself. Then he eyed my water bottle.

"What you got there?" he asked. "Nitroglycerin, er...water" was my reply.
"This is dangerous. I can’t let you take this much liquid on the plane."

I didn’t know what exactly he meant, whether he meant that i had an explosive liquid in the bottle, or that drinking too much liquid well...might mean...well...let’s just say that a plane’s upholstery is terribly difficult to clean. I know, like I would soil it anyway... Rolling Eyes

"it’s just water"

"I don’t know that. This could be dangerous bringing it onto the aircraft."

"let me then dump it out in this trash can here."

"nope, too dangerous. regulations."

"grrr. let me drink the water all up right here, that way we eliminate the problem."

"sorry sir. you don’t have possession of this dangerous item."

"you drink it."

That blew it. he said, "Come with me" he led me through a door, and back into the public area of the airport., the part with no security required to access. He then instructed me to actually dump my precious nitroglycerin into a public trash can! Shocked Ironic?

In fact, it wasn’t that bad, I just had to go through security a second time, and that was the end of hard time at the airport with the security Nazis.

Funny, huh?

Airport security personnel here in the US must’ve run through the Stupid Forest and hit their head on every branch, and then circled back for another pass. Most I’ve seen and unfortunately met have been incompetent jerks.

Last time we were at LAX we were interrupted in the middle of asking a question so the guy and his girlfriend could exchange a kiss and sweet nothings. Real professional.

The liquid thing comes from a terror plot here in the Uk last year where they tried to blow up twenty passenger flights to America using liquid explosives in drink bottles. Fortunately MI5 had it covered and the men were arrested at Heathrow. Ever since then liquids have been a hot issue with security everywhere.

There should be a way to check if it’s water, seriously...

but it would probably take longer than just confiscating it....and for the record, as BtO who has flown 3 times in the past couple of months says, as long as you follow the guidelines (which are fairly clear) and take off your jacket and such you will be fine.

and as bill maher said, part of the problem is, the guards have to be unbiased, and somewhat random. Give the same consideration to a old lady with a grandkid eating cookies as too two arabic looking men who keep praying...

rather silly in all.

Spammers really are amazing creatures. You can learn all there is to know about their ways in a month. And yet, after a hundred years, they can still surprise you. Razz

Oh, there’s no doubt that the guy knew what I had in the bottle was good old H20. But if I showed up with 20 gatorade bottles all taped together and with wires sticking out, some interactive exchanges are sure to show up. Personally i think they did a good thorough job.

It’s funny, but not something you should try again. The security guys are supposed to do their job, and do it thoroughly. If they slip up at all, and something happens, they are held responsible. And they don’t want it to happen. Just cooperate, don’t mess around with them and joke like that, and everything goes smoothly. It’s only airport security.

I got nabbed coming back into the States from my trip to the UK in the fall. They saw on the little paper that I had to fill out that I’d been in Norway, and they didn’t trust me not to bring in "dangerous food items." So they nabbed me, and searched my luggage for reindeer sausage. Not kidding! (well, actually, they just threw it through a scanner, they didn’t go rifling through everything.) I figured they would have been more worried about the chopped mango I was carrying for breakfast, since that would’ve still had live cells, but nope. Didn’t care at all.

And when I went on a cruise, once, I got nabbed for a random inspection then, too. Heh. I guess I must look like a terrorist, or something.

That little incident trying to get back over the US/Mexican Border without my passport and no ID probably didn’t help, either. Laughing Razz Long story.
Never kid about politicians. The more bizarre the joke, the more likely it is to come true.

Totally agree with CG here. Even tho it may seem ridiculous, it’s too risky to "assume" someone’s joking and just let it pass. He had to make sure everything was OK and I’m not surprised he acted like this.

Let’s say it was nigrolycerin and you blew the plane away... later on, detectives would find out that the bomber played a joke on the security guy and clearly said he was carrying nitroclycerin and the security guard did nothing Very Happy
