Dunland
« on: September 09, 2009, 03:30:41 pm »
There are probably many, many, oh-so many answers, but why weren't  [Dunland] part of the [Raider] culture with the Dunlander keyword? It seems like it would make so much more sense that way.

Corsairs, Dunlenders, Easterlings, Southrons...they all fell under the [Raider] category--and the way that Easterlings, Corsairs, and Southrons cards have limited interactions within the culture, I think it would have worked.

I guess because of the geographical separation and the difference in allegiance - [Raider] Men are aligned to Sauron where [Dunland] Men are aligned to Saruman.

There also needed to be more shadow cultures, as Moria wasn't coming back and the nazgul didn't have anything in sets 4 or 5

That's the best answer. But I still think that seeing as they raided Rohan, they could have been [Raider]s. Just saying.

Of course I say all this as someone who hates Shadows-onward because of [Men] and [Orc] races encompassing everything. Again, this could've been nicely avoided with the unloaded "Dunlander" keyword similar to "Corsair," "Easterling," or "Southron."

Point is, I wouldn't hate on [Men] if they still had those unloaded keywords.

This is the actual answer. When TTT was first being spoiled, at least one design article was posted that said something to that effect. At first, there was just the Evil Men culture, encompassing Southrons, Easterlings, and Dunlendings. But as design progressed, they realized they only had [Isengard] and this Evil Men culture as Shadow cultures, so Dunland got separated.

Hmm...could have had the Grishnakh crowd in the Two Towers set. I mean, everyone had to expect Smeagol/Gollum in Battle of Helms Deep. [Sauron] and [Wraith] made their appearances.

But interesting note. Thanks. :gp: to all contributors.
