Movie Tournament Style
« on: October 17, 2009, 08:48:04 pm »
Okay guys...I am just curious what people think about this idea.

If you were playing a "Best of Three" series in Movie Block format, what if the first game was Fellowship block sites, the second game was Towers block sites, and the third game was Movie/King block sites?

Sure, the X-List would have to be expanded to include Ettenmoors*, but I think it is kind of a cool idea.

Don't know if this should be in Bag End...

I personally have thought for a long time that you should be able to use either any combination of sites from 1-10 in movie (with appropriate x list) or all fotr, ttt, or king sites. It would give some of the weaker shadows a huge bonus and add a fun twist.

Well...to me that is too close to Shadows. One of my problems with the Shadows site path is that you could go from Helm's Deep to Mount Doom to Hobbiton. It wouldn't be that obscene by maintaining Movie Block sitepaths, but the whole point of Movie Block is to be Standard from before Shadows came out.

Yeah, I saw that, but my understanding of that format allowed one person to use one Block's site path and another person to use another block's site path. My goal was to have three consecutive games where the first you used Fellowship sites, the second you use Towers, and the third King.

I saw some rules online and I downloaded the word doc. It is a 27 site single game and it lays out the sites in order and follows the movies all the way through.  It incorporates a reinforcement deck that at each site "9" you would shuffle in an additional 20 cards to your draw deck and continue along on your journey.  I'll see if I can dig up the doc file and send it to you wtk

That would be a rather long game...
I take it you design large decks as well? 20 cards isn't enough to make it another 9 sites.

Hmm...if I can win a regular game in the first 9 sites, I think I would just keep playing my regular decks and go for the kill!

I believe that if you do a full 27 site game you essentially break it down into 3 small 9 site games.  Every nine sites you shuffle in a booster deck.  I think that they can be anywhere from 20 to 30 cards...or you could just make up a 180-200 massive deck to play with and divide it into thirds.  The site path does follow the movie, first nine for FoTR, second nine TTT, and third nine would be RoTK

I would still just use one regular sized deck and just go for the kill before site F9.

I think it would actually be even cooler if someone wanted to work with me on creating a new site path 1-9 and we could make a new game format--Movie Path or something. Movie Block game with a new set of sites. Not as a real format, but just something that could be cool.

my best idea would be like

sites 1F-3F could be used as 1,
site 4F-6F could be used as 2
sites 7F-9F could be used as 3,
sites 1T-3T could be used as 4,
sites 4T-6T could be used as 5,
sites 7T-9T could be used as 6,
sites 1R-3R could be used as site 7,
sites 4R-6R could be used as 8 and
sites 7R-9R could be used as 9.

the problem would be some sites would be ridiculously OP at their slot like steps of edoras at site 7 or bridge of khazad dum at site 2, but it seems like it could work

Well I would re-create every site and make my own site path. More likely, it would be:
Shire-Bree: Site 1
Weathertop-Drimill Dale: Site 2
Lothlorien-Amon Hen: Site 3
Westfold-Fangorn-Edoras Hall: Site 4
Helm's Deep: Site 5
Edoras Hall-Osgiliath-Minas Tirith: Sanctuary at 6
Pelennor: Site 7
Between post-Battle of Minas Tirith and Gorgoroth Plains: Site 8
Mount Doom (and related sites): Site 9

That'd be how I'd do it. Of course, there would be problems. Bridge of Khazad-Dum at site 2? It might be: Play the Balrog from your draw deck or discard pile; it's twilight cost is -6 and it is strength -6 or something like that to make up for the fact that a Fellowship might not be set up yet.

Minor problem would be allies' home sites.

It would be far better to expand the site path a little bit to say 12 or any other number..
Then you would have a reasonable larger site path and sites enough to fit in the most
important parts of the movie.. or maybe the sites could be two way'ed like.. when you
move to 2 it's weathertop, but if u start on it it's rivendell.. Then you would have to make
a lot of small sanctuaries, where you could heal only 2 wounds, say every 2nd site in order
for the free peoples to survive 12 sites. And then maybe you could even have booster decks
when you switch movies.. The oportunities are limitless.. I would be far happier with a com-
plex format.. which would be more fun to play, i will even try and create one !
Thx for the inspiration :p
