Thinking Positively
« on: April 11, 2010, 09:25:54 am »
So, as of yesterday, I am a Mac (and those are possibly the most pretentious advertisements ever).

So, the saga that ended with me purchasing this iMac can be largely summarized as "My Dell was terrible from the moment I purchased it and I was tired of dealing with it (and, eventually, it completely shat the bed and will no longer even turn on to the start screen)."

I did not really mind, though, except for that I had something like 80+ GB of music on there (and a good amount of virus-free porn I wouldn't have minded transferring over, too). But, alas, Apple was not able to access those files for the transfer.

As I tried to transfer music from my iPod to the hard drive of my Mac (there are programs that do that, apparently) my iPod became "corrupted" which deleted everything. So now I am sitting in front of my sleek new computer, manually loading every CD I owned (luckily, for the most part, I owned every CD that was on my iPod). I have just moved onto the letter B as I am writing this, and will probably become very familiar with this as I continue.

As I am trying to be positive, I am at least getting to really upgrade my CD collection as I am (rarely) finding albums with no disc inside. So I am appreciating this opportunity to consolidate my collection. I am also getting more familiar with Mac's operating system, which I had avoided my whole life until this point.

Hopefully I get GCCG running sometime in the next week (I suspect I'll focus on that next weekend). And while my iTunes will not be as stout for a while, I am getting to appreciate everything I have (music-wise) as I rebuild my iTunes.

If there are any Mac users here who have recommendations for a first-time user, or their own great computer stories, I'd love to hear them.

I am also currently trying to name my Mac. I think I need to give it a little bit of time to build up its personality, as I take naming things very seriously. My iPod is named 'Poster Nutbag,' which is a reference to the Phish song 'Harpua.' I don't think it will take its name from a song, although I cannot be sure. Some other things I have named:
Most Recent Fantasy Baseball Team: Wendy Peffercorn (the sultry lifeguard in The Sandlot).
Most Recent Fantasy Football Team: Ant Farm Keyboard (a Frisky Dingo reference).
[Recently deceased] Bearded Dragon: Hueco (pronounced "hWay-ko)--a Hueco is a small water-holding depression in boulders or rocks.

It is worth noting that I still have not named either of my basses or my Ovation Legend although I regularly refer to my Saryo as 'Red.'

I'm not going to steal your names, but what are some things you own that you have named?

My recent computer names have been:

Frosty, QuickSilver, FlyingAcer, TineeeTimm, MudPie

All of those have something to do with the computer's hardware or appearance.

My old Mac Mini was Hobbes (10.4 Tiger was the OS at the time).

I was thinking about naming this computer Pietro Maximoff who is Quicksilver in Marvel comics. Everything runs quickly and it seems to be able to multitask, but I'm going to avoid naming that now that I know that it was already used.

first, we named the workgroup on our LAN, INNERRIM, and then named all of our computers after planets in the SW universe....my brothers picked Endor, Hoth, and Naboo, and I was Coruscant, being the main "server".  (ironic, i know, that they all picked outer rim territories, but what the hey).

My current computer is named Ancalagon, for the epic black finish, inside and out, and that it breathes fire, flies, and can only be killed by a magically enchanted, flying boat.  I will probably be forced to name my next generation machine Earandil, for that reason.

Amen.  If only I could scrounge up the necessary funds.  They're not cheap, for sure.

I haven't named my computer. But I have named my guitars. My acoustic is named Adelaide, and my electric is named Trevor (because its autographed by lead singer/guitarist of TFK/FM Static, Trevor McNevan).

Nice!  I listen to them all the time.  I haven't named my guitars.... yet... ;)

My laptop is named Rakker (rascal) to honor my cat (he past away in 2008).

Anyway, what kind of music do you like KTJ? If you also like Simple Minds then I can send you 2 liveconcerts from 2009 (Amsterdam and Tilburg).

I'm a big fan of Mac and the OS/X operating system. In fact, I am such a fan that I bought the components to build my own computer and then "Hackintoshed" it to run OS/X so I could get the benefit of having a Mac without have to pay the Apple Tax for hardware. :)

Get rid of Safari immediately, though. It's an inferior browsing experience. If you want a good customizable browser I suggest Firefox. If you want something that's lightning fast and lightweight, however, I'm currently using Google Chrome for Mac and love it.

I find that people switching from PC to Mac have difficulty getting their way around in the Finder, which is a tad different than Windows Explorer, and adjusting to using the Dock instead of the Start Menu.

Also, once you have a CD or DVD inserted you can't just hit the button on your drive to eject it. You have to "umount" it from the operating system itself. This prevents data corruption and physical damage that could occur from removing the disc in a mid-spin. You can do this by either hitting the eject key on your keyboard or finding the icon for the CD/DVD on your desktop and dragging it to the trash can.

Application installation also works much differently. I'm not so sure I could do a very good job of explaining it in a post, so I'll just tell you that it'll take a few times for you to get used to the process.

If you ever need any help with your Mac, let me know. I'm always happy to be of service.

I have been using Google Chrome since (I think it was) chang brought it up here a few months ago. I am already cool with the dock and Finder. But I appreciate your generous offer of help, Hobbiton Lad!

So here's the deal, I have eclipsed the 80 GB for Poster Nutbag. Thus, I'm planning to sell him and buy a 160 GB iPod.

If someone would consider purchasing a used, fifth-generation filled 80 GB iPod, let me know by making an offer in my PM box.

I would consider shipping overseas. If there is a good amount of interest, I will post a message with a list of artists and albums (which would be a total pain).

So I have finally named my Mac: Daphne Blake.

It is slender, intelligent, sexy, and it would do anything for me.
