This discussion and ruling is part of the series of discussions and rulings for an "Unofficial Rulebook" as described here.

This discussion will be open from Sept 1, 2010 - Sept 4, 2010.
The outcome of this discussion and ruling will be added to the "Unofficial Rulebook".

Discussion #16:

What does Crashing Cavalry mea when it says those characters cannot use skirmish special abilities?  (previous discussion)

Option 1: (initially favored ruling)
Skirmish special abilities in those characters' game text cannot be used; since characters only "use" their own game text.

Option 2:
Skirmish special abilities from any card's game text cannot be used during skirmishes involving those characters; since characters can "use" game text on other cards.

Technically, I think characters can "use" only their own game text, making it option 1, but I'm guessing here the intent was to cover all skirmish special abilities. However, I'm not keen on option 2, since that seems to be twisting what "use" means.

So, I think Crashing Cavalry should just receive erratum: "Skirmish special abilities cannot be used in skirmishes involving those characters until the start of the regroup phase."

EDIT - Erratum suggestion withdrawn

Your erratum would cover much more ground than I think was intended. Imagine that the minion affected by Crashing Cavalry is Fierce and survives the first skirmish. In a fierce skirmish, if he were assigned to another companion, then that companion couldn't use skirmish special abilities either.

The same would apply if more minions were assigned to the companion affected by Crashing Cavalry.

I believe it's option 1. Just those 2 selected characters cannot use their special abilities.

I think it's option 1, with no erratum needed.   As is, it prevents nasty stuff like Ulaire Enquea, Thrall of the One, etc.

Ah, good point--and that's more than I intended, having the effect extend to other characters as well. Retracted while I think about this.

How do people who use Crashing Cavalry now currently play it? I think part of the push for a revision was because it seemed to be more technically limited than expected--but if that's what people go with, anyway...

No objections here for option 1, then.

Option 1 it is.  The "Unofficial Rulebook" has been updated.
