This discussion and ruling is part of the series of discussions and rulings for an "Unofficial Rulebook" as described here.

This discussion will be open from Sept 10, 2010 - Sept 14, 2010.
The outcome of this discussion and ruling will be added to the "Unofficial Rulebook".

Discussion #21:  (two issues)

Issue 1:

If a character cannot be assigned to a skirmish that meets certain criteria, can replacing someone in a skirmish be done to bypass that?  (previous discussion)

Option 1 (initially favored ruling):
No. If a character cannot be assigned to a particular skirmish, that particular skirmish is not allowed to take place.

Option 2:
Yes.  Replacing someone in a skirmish bypasses any checking for the type of skirmish that character may not be assigned to.

Issue 2:

When a character replaces another character in a skirmish, do actions that trigger when that character is assigned to a skirmish take place?  (previous discussion)

Option 1:
Yes

Option 2:
No

Issue 1 -  Option 1; replacing still requires assignment and if assignment conditions have not been met, that assignment cannot happen.

Issue 2 - Option 1; assignment happens, assignment responses trigger. However, actions that are done at the start of the skirmish (e.g. mounts) do not happen, since that particular skirmish is still in progress and its start is past tense.

  • Wouldn't it be nice if we were Hodor?

The rules don't give an answer either way, so we need to make up our own decision. I will say option 1 for both counts.

  • "I see...I look foul and feel foul. Is that it?"
I'm thinking option 1 now (for both), after considering this part in the rulebook:

"A skirmish phase ends after all actions triggered by winning or losing that skirmish have resolved. At this point, characters who were involved in that skirmish are no longer assigned."

Option 1 would prevent a situation where two characters are assigned to each other without having been "assigned" to each other, or a situation where two characters are skirmishing each other but not assigned to each other.

Option 1 it is for both issues.  The "Unofficial Rulebook" has been updated.
