Can Someone Who Owns a Blu-Ray Player Provide a Consult?
« on: September 28, 2010, 04:26:40 pm »
Every once in a while, I think "you know? I should get rid of all of my DVDs and upgrade them all to Blu-Ray." I haven't yet, but I do want to do a little bit more research on it.

As it turns out, most of what I watch on DVD--The Beatles Anthology, House seasons 1-3, Futurama, and South Park--aren't even available to this point on Blu-Ray.

Does someone who has a Blu-Ray player care to share where he (or she) gets the information on when stuff on Blu-Ray is going to be released? Frankly, I wouldn't want to get a Blu-Ray player unless I could just upgrade my entire collection in one swoop (or at least knock out the stuff that isn't more obscure)...and it doesn't seem like that is close to happening.

On record, I don't really have a lot of DVDs anyways. But I do usually put a disc of something on when I am going to bed or for background noise when I am at home.

Honestly, and this is also kind of stupid, but beyond the better picture and sound quality, one of the biggest positives about Blu-Ray to me is that the cases are smaller and largely uniform.

I hate some of the DVD cases on my shelf that are different sizes or the cardboard sleeve variety. I know that sounds ridiculous, but what can I say? I'm a little OCD.

Rip 'em all to your hard drive, fire up BOXEE or some such, and throw all of the originals in a cardboard box in the basement. ;)

Nice idea in theory...but I don't have, and don't intend to get for a while, computer-to-television connection. But yes, people keep saying Netflix...

Unless you are willing to spend a ton of money on such a project its not really worth it.  I tried to do that awhile ago and it failed.  The picture looks a lot better etc. but I have such a hard time spending $25 on a blu ray when I can get the dvd for half of that.  I buy movies on blu but only stuff I know is awesome.  Most of my TV on DVD purchases are on DVD, even thats gone done a lot since I got Netflix.  I would say buy a blu ray player and just buy your new stuff on blu and upgrade the movies you really enjoy.
