Five Versions Of: The Weight of a Legacy
« on: December 15, 2010, 03:36:34 pm »
Felipe Musco brought up a point in the Fellowship board and even though I don't support the PC, things have been dead in the Chamber so I am just going to make a topic.

I thought about some of the worst cards in the game and for fun was going to do "Five Versions," that is, five cards that would be more playable than the real version.

Since The Weight of a Legacy is just terrible, I figured I would start with that. I might do more, and I might not. We'll see.

5.
(0) The Weight of a Legacy [Sauron]
Event * Response
If a [Gondor] Man loses a skirmish involving a [Sauron] Orc, you may make the Free People's player discard the top three cards of his or her draw deck.

4.
(0) The Weight of a Legacy [Sauron]
Condition
To play, exert a [Sauron] minion.
Bearer must be a [Gondor] Man. Bearer is strength -1 for each burden you can spot (limit -3).

3.
(0) The Weight of a Legacy [Sauron]
Condition * Support Area
Each time a Free Peoples Man is played, the Free People's player must add a burden or discard two cards from hand.

2.
(0) The Weight of a Legacy [Sauron]
Event * Maneuver
Exert a [Sauron] minion to discard a tale or possession.

1.
(0) The Weight of a Legacy [Sauron]
Condition * Support Area
When you play this condition, you may spot three [Sauron] minions to discard an artifact.
Skirmish: Discard this condition to make a [Sauron] or [Wraith] minion strength +1.

Well, thoughts?

I like 4 the best. But there should be something extra if bearer is aragorn, such as (idk) no limit?

The existing lore implies this would be ok to play on any man (perhaps even Rohan or gandalf men). This would make the existing card usable whilst retaining the original intent. I like the idea of additional text to mess up Aragorn.

1 or 2 would be the most useful if it were changed. 4 is much better if they play gondor men.

Since I own 125 of them, I'm going to jump in. There's nothing wrong with a anti-Aragorn card in Fellowship Block, or all of Movie Block for that matter. Such a Little Thing was played, for instance.
I'll suggest this:

0 cost Condition
To play, spot a Sauron Orc. Plays on a Gondor Man.
The Free Peoples player may not exert bearer.

It shuts down Aragorn's Bow, Aragorn ROTN, and Horn of Boromir, which are all common in Fellowship Block. It also feels right - the weight makes it hard to do things. It's roughly equivalent to Leechcraft from Towers, which is marginally playable. That's fine.

Of your ideas, I like #4 the best, but it feels very strong. How many conditions attach and give a permanent -3? And can double up for a -6? Are there any? Leechcraft requires an exertion to get -1. Yes, I know it can be dead, but most decks in Fellowship Block play a Gondor Man. It's powerful in Block. With Desperate Defense of the Ring things could get ugly.

#$&*@!...not being able to exert is probably taking it way too far. Gondor Bowmen, etc., 90% of Gondor's benefits are based on exertions.

Maybe if it was: Exert to play, discard at the end of turn.

Even then...way too powerful.

I kinda like the idea of not being able to exert. It is a condition and easily countered with an appropriate strategy.

4 needs to be unique or cost an exertion. In fact, I think any copy of this card should cost an exertion.

I don't think 2 fits the general theme of [Sauron] culture in the FotR block.

The not being able to exert thing exists with Throw Yourself in Next Time (a personal fav of mine), again if it was unique or just on Aragorn that would be more balanced.

What of something along these lines:

(0) The Weight of a Legacy [Sauron]
Condition
-1 Strength
To play, exert a [Sauron] minion.
Bearer must be a Man. Limit 1 per bearer.
If bearer is a [Gondor] Man, he is strength -1.
If bearer is Aragorn, he is strength -1.

It makes it much more playable because it can be played on any man, but it's more effective if played on a Gondor Man because their legacy weighs heavily upon them and even more effective on Aragorn because his legacy is even heavier. It is also not related to corruption, discard or wounding (there are plenty of such cards in [Sauron] culture) so it could help if one wants to make a Beatdown or Swarm [Sauron] decks.

your next card should be men of harad

that said, I like 4 the best, but I like the idea behind three even if it is overpowered. It should be more like the card from BohD something like,

The Weight Of A Legacy
Event - Response
If a [Gondor] man is played, make the free peoples player discard two cards from hand or add a burden.

Fixed your number 1 to include the right symbol. I like 1, plain and better, but the thing is, it still KIND of sucks. Keep in mind it was designed for FotR Block play, initially. You should focus on that. Boromir had no Legacy that was heavy on his chest, so Aragorn is the logical choice for the card. It should be focused on him somehow. Ditchig artifacts, OTOH, is a nice bonus to it, making up for it being so narrow.

Well, if Aragorn decided not to return as the king, then Boromir would've been the next steward, so he also had a kind of a legacy. His would be a withered tree and Gondor fallen. If the card keeps its condition (bearer must be Aragorn), it will remain almost equally unplayable.

Also, I don't think it should be an event as ket's suggestions 2 and 5 are. It is not something that happens at some point and then ends just as suddenly, but something that is constantly with Aragorn, so Weight of a Legacy being a condition is the only logical choice.

Amen on that. As to it being unplayable, remember, it was Felowship Block when it came out, Can You Protect Me From Yourself is very playable in the format, which comes to show the card just needs to be better. Of course, it it's playable outside Block, awesome, but I woulnd't go to lenghts as to change the whole concept of the card. I think number 1, with it's artifact-discarding sub-ability, for instance, would be playable as another condition to spot in [Sauron] grind decks (nice one, also, costing 0 and everything, I mean, it could affect Aragorn even NOT being borne by it), AND would have a purpose in other formats.

Also, I don't think it should be an event as ket's suggestions 2 and 5 are.

I don't see why it cannot be an event. Was Aragorn as concerned with his legacy when he was banging Arwen as when he held the Palantir?

What about:

If bearer is Aragorn he cannot use his abilities? (as additional text). The condition could play on any [Gondor] man.

This would stop the choke Aragorn in fellowship that almost everyone plays (I think - does it count as an ability if it doesn't have a bold phase action?)
