Extended Movie
« on: February 13, 2011, 01:08:03 am »
I'll admit there's a lot of things (new sitepath, new shadow cultures, new card types, new keywords, etc.) that I, and many other players, don't really care for that entered the LOTR TCG game after the mount doom expansion.  This is a big reason why the "Movie Block" is such a popular format; yes, it is great.

However, there were a few glimmers of goodness that did come after mount doom that get lost in the post-Shadows world.  With the existing formats, you either avoid it altogether with "Movie", or have to accept all of it with "Standard" or "Expanded".  I've struggled with this for a long time.  Can't we have the best of both worlds and make use of all that is good in this game?

The definition of "Extended Movie" format is located here.  I'd like to get feedback from you guys about it.  Perhaps the ideas it brings may be ideas to consider as the TLHH Rules Team, Dream Team, etc. work to continue support of the game we all enjoy. If you guys don't mind, perhaps we could at some point add it as a custom format on GCCG.  Please, take a look.  I'd appreciate the feedback.

Thanks!

Sets 14, 16 & 19... Really?

What about 11, 12, 13, 15, 17 and 18?

I'm not saying that it's not worth a try, but my first thought is Grimbeorn... Besides him, the rest of sets 14, 16 & 19 are arguably not that good. Seems kind of not that appealing to play.

The inclusion of those sets allows for "Reflections-like" additions to the card pool, without adding all the other cultures, sitepaths, and keywords that are in the post-Shadows world.  In other words, they add some variety to the game, without bringing all the baggage at came with the other later sets.  If nobody thinks these card are any good, there's no harm in including them.  If anyone wondered, I use about 25 of these cards in different decks.

A very similar notion is the fact that the WETA Collection Promos are already included in Movie format:
Ghan-buri-Ghan, Chieftain of the Woses
Radagast's Staff
Anarion, Lord of Anorien
Erkenbrand, Master of Westfold
Tom Bombadil's Hat

Are all of those WETA cards the most useful cards ever? Does everyone use all of them? I doubt it, but I think they add more (variety, fun, etc.) than they take away.

In short, I think it's better to include cards that are potentially useful that people elect not to use, than to include cards (or blocks) that are so powerful, that they completely unbalance the rest of the card pool.

Maybe we should nail down the other formats (Poorman's, Non-Hunters) first?

That is certainly an option.  I think Poorman's is a great idea and should be ironed out first.

I'll just assert that more players (with their preference for Movie Block) would make use of Extended Movie, before taking any interest at all in Non-Hunters.  Even I'm leaning that way now.  Thoughts?

I liked Bloodlines Standard and Bloodlines Extended pretty much. But maybe I'm just the only one...
