Republican Presidential Candidates...
« on: May 06, 2011, 06:06:38 am »
...Anyone watch the debate on FOX last night? I liked Paul and Cain, Santorum and Pawlenty are so-so. Didn't like Johnson at all.

Really, Ron Paul is on the top of my list right now. His views, IMO are closest to those of our Founding Fathers. A President Paul would hack apart all of those un-Constitutional bureaucracies that sprung up from Roosevelt to Johnson to Carter, to Bush, and now Obama. A President Paul would stablize the dollar by tying it to gold, removing its questionable 'fiat' status. A President Paul would leave decisions on drugs and marriage up to the states, instead of pushing a Federal solution down the throats of half the country. Also, according to this CNN poll, he has the best chance of beating Obama: http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2011/05/05/cnn-poll-still-no-front-runner-in-the-battle-for-the-gop-nomination/

Ron Paul, anyone?

Heck I'd vote for him.  I heard him speak in person once and was like "Man I want to see what would happen if this guy became president."

I know I'm not voting for Trump though ;)

Amen. Trump just spouts stuff he thinks will win him fans. I hope to God he doesn't make it through the primary. Not only does he stand a slim chance of winning, if he did win, his lack of experience in politics would make everything the dems and libs are saying about the GOP true, mainly that it can't fix the country.

Here's a little chart I found that shows candidates on the issues: http://psudo.us/sho/GOP.html.
I filled in a number on each issue representing my view on it, and, a real shock here- apparently my views are closest to Ron Paul. Whoduh thunkit? Anyway, here's my positions:
(1 is no support, 5 is complete support).

Ok, this is my doing some dead topic recovery for a change. Super Tuesday and it looks like this dude Mitt Romney is going to win the thing. I have a few questions though. Why does it seem like politics in the US is always about trashing others? Is that just an illusion, or is this factional? It seems to me that it is mostly about pointing out the major flaws in others rather that trying to tell a good story and being moderate about the way you are going to perform. Everyone is going to do it better and the guy before was abominable. And who, I really want to know this, are these people that stand behind every candidate applauding like they are welcoming the Savior? They must have blisters on their hands.....No offence though, just lack of understanding...well ok a mild sense of sarcasm went into that.
This is however the #1 reason I would like people to vote for ideas, rather than for people trying to execute them. Good ideas should win, not the person with the slickest talk.

It has to do with the completely broken two-party system.  In other countries such a system exists, but under each of the two parties you have a dozen or so smaller parties who basically work together to get votes.  Not saying politics isn't screwed up in other places as well, but it's much more of a team thing elsewhere.   Here it's just a complete clusterfuck of two arbitrary parties opposing other people because they're not Number One.  It's stupid, really, and I think hitting a critical mass.  Eventually people won't take it anymore and something uglier than OWS will go down.  Which is sorely needed at this point.

I think it also has to do with the cult culture in the U.S. If you believe in a candidate, you are going to go to war for him (or her). Anyone who doesn't agree with you and your candidate is a hater and the opposition is the devil himself. It's also like the celebrity culture in that as soon as you're on the national radar, everything you've ever done comes out from under the rug and if you screwed up once, it'll be all over the internet until you're out of the race. And a lot of people I have personally spoken to often say they feel like they're picking between, "the lesser of two evils".

This was pretty much a long way to say, yes, America is mostly negative politics: "Yeah, but he..." stuff.

This is not the case in the Netherlands, if any of you were worrying about me and my family :D
