Meh...He didn't change it. It's just a nickname that came along with him becomming a sith lord. I don't think it has many practical uses, bit i guess it gives u that warm "it's good to belong" feeling.

Without putting much thought whatsoever into this ....

Can we also assume that Sauron is good and that the Fellowship are bad by trying to interfere with his rule by destroying the One Ring? Does Sauron actually do anything 'evil' or is it just those that oppose him that lead to him doing 'evil' things. After all think of all those poor orcs and uruk-hai and goblins and trolls the fellowship kill in order to oppose Sauron's rule and destroy the One Ring. Is it just that we can't sympathise with these humanoid creatures because they are different, and difference is good enough reason to kill them off?

I guess i am asking can this reverse logic argument transend to other similarly themed stories/movies?

I think that the Lord of the Rings books (and movies, for that matter), fairly portray Sauron's objectives of domination and cruelty and clearly make him antagonistic throughout. Frankly, Tolkien is a much better story-teller than George Lucas.

And books are much better story tellers than films. U can hardly compare.

exactly. When you just take the cinema version, you can argue the same way and make Sauron look like "the good guy".

Hmm. I don't think you can. From the beginning of the film, it talks about his corruption of perfection, his malice and ill-will, and his wish to enslave all of the free peoples of Middle Earth.

Before you argue, none of these things are said about the Empire. It just says that they want to rule through fear (which most governments do) and that they are "evil."

But it is being told by Galadriel, not the most reliable person if you want to see the whole story. Darn you Peter Jackson, for not allowing Sauron to tell us his story!

Sauron wasn't always evil. He got corrupted by melkor. Let's talk about lotr(and silmarillion aswell) books instead of lotr films, for some extra consistancy. Since we had to bring that in.  :)
(Not that it has much to do with the topic, but i've decided it's important for those who don't know the whole thing.)

Also, and I have no problem saying this, A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back are the only good things in Star Wars lore.

Am I to infer from this that you have watched/read/played every piece of Star Wars lore, then? If so, that's impressive. Most impressive...

I find your lack of familiarity with Timothy Zahn disturbing.

Yes. This. Timothy Zahn is the best thing to happen to Star Wars since The Empire Strikes Back and the only SW author I'll read anymore. Reading Survivor's Quest now. The best thing about Zahn is that it is the Star Wars that feels right and makes sense.

I haven't read it 5 times, but it recently joined my annual reading list. :)
