Hiroshima?

It's all about precentages isn't it? The pecentage of lives lost in the galaxy to destroy Alderaan compared to the percentage of lives lost from Hiroshima amongst many other attrocities committed by 'good' countries to oppose the 'evil' uprising.

A billion lives when you have multiple galaxies might be the same as I don't know ... maybe a swine flu scare.

Poor Emperor Palpatine ... all he wants to do is look after his people and for some reason a small group want to spoil it for everyone :)

It's kind of fun sticking up for the underdog.

Ow come on. People with conscience don't just passively accept things that are wrong. Just tell me(I'm referring to ppl who don't think empire is evil), what does a person have to do, to be a villain
by your standards. Obviously destroying a planet isn't enough. Imagine someone up there discussing about destroying earth, as we speak. Civilians, dood. Killing civilians is bad. There is no justifiable reason to do that. Thus, the deed is EVIL. You have to make a line somewhere.

Look ... I agree ... but both sides killed civilians. One side may have killed more. It's a sad fact that in war, civilians pay a high price.

Look at human history .. those some may consider 'the good guys' have killed alot of civilians through their actions and at times they have killed alot in single actions (like blowing up Alderaan).

I guess in the end ...  war is evil ... and deciding who is good and bad is not always as easy as it seems.

I agree with your last post, yeh. Too bad that weapons of mass destruction ever came out. Wars should be decided fair and square on the battlefield. Now i'm being utopian, but anyway.
I guess if u refuse to look wider than just the original trilogy, you'll just have to settle the film makers saying the Empire is evil. They should know. But if you want further proof you'll have to check out further evidence.

Ket suggested that the Death Star must have been built by someone and perhaos they were hard working contractors trying to make a living and support there families. If there were civiliians on the Death Star when they blew it up (especially the second time as it was incomplete).

Either way ... it's just silly ... but you never know!

Well, they killed those who supported the Empire on the Death star, and, if someone supports bad guys, I suppose to call him "evil"...

Anyway, there might have been also some slaves on the Death Star (even though the first one was already completed, so I guess not), what do you prefer? Living as a Slave for some bad guys that killed your familiy or die? We're getting into some real serious stuff in here...

well if were talking about plot holes...

In ep 4, why didn't the empire blow the planet in their way to smithereens so they could destroy Yavin 4

I just wanted to add something to this point:

Hardly Hiroshima. It seems more like if we had nuked one of our cities during WW2. Alderaan was an Imperial world and the Empire destroyed it simply to make a point and coax some information from Leia. Regardless of how many lives there are in the galaxy, killing billions is never justifiable.

Or it could have been constructed by droids. Or the Tooth Fairy. It's pure conjecture, and that has no place in rational debate. Non-existent moral dilemmas and saying that 'The Rebellion might have committed some war crimes' is pointless. As ket so insistently points out, we are simply going on what information we have from Episodes IV, V and IV.

There's supposed to be a lot of people on Death Star by some sources, but that's outside the original trilogy.

Well, the Death Star could be explained as bringing death to intolerance of other ideas. Keep in mind, military operations, weapons, and bases have taken on less-than-savory names.

That right there, that is evil. If you cannot see that, then there's no point in continuing this.

I work under the premise that "evil" is only a word. I might also use the same label, but for me it will always remain merely a label. I do not feel this should signal the end of the discussion, however :)

...who would give their ships names like Accuser, Executor, and Tyrant?

Are these crafts named in the film? Or is this additional information brought in from somewhere else?
-wtk
Looks like I'll have to concede this point; not even Executor is named in the scripts. Out of curiosity, does anyone know what canon level these names fall under?

If you'll pardon me saying it, that's a rather bland take on life. Doesn't that kind of make this whole argument a moot point under such a view? I mean, I could murder someone and excuse it by saying in my little reality murder is justified? Just, ah, throwing that out there for consideration. After all, the Empire can't be 'evil' or even 'good' if there is no good or evil, it would just exist.
