Netflix Recommendations
« on: January 16, 2012, 07:10:09 pm »
Hey there,

I know I'm hardly active anymore, but I thought I would start a topic for people with Netflix streaming accounts to post recommendations on unusual shows or movies that have been watched. So this isn't really the place to recommend Jersey Shore or Friday Night Lights; rather, if you've gone through something that wouldn't normally show up on someone's queue, drop a recommendation.

I just watched Senna and thought it was a fantastic documentary. I would definitely recommend it to anyone with an interest in Formula One Racing or Ayrton Senna's life in general.

There's a strange movie called The Fall that you might want to check out. if for no other reason than there will never be another movie like it. ever. its really strange, but very artistic. rated R for some violence i think, but its a very beautiful film. you might not want to shell out money to rent it, because its not everyone's cup of tea, but it might be worth dropping on your netflix queue.

How about Hercules Legendary Journeys? Actually entertaining in my opinion. You should check it out.  ;)

The Pixar Story: Story about Pixar's development, showcases all the struggles it went through. Has interviews with Steve Jobs and a bunch of others. You really appreciate Pixar all the more after watching this. The struggles they went through financially, personally and emotionally really resonate here.

Between the Folds: Awesome origami documentary that looks at its applications to advanced mathematics, spacecraft design, art, etc. Artistic and inspiring.

Sherlock: Awesome BBC series that drew over 8 million viewers in Britain. Set in modern-day London, with taxis instead of hansom cabs, text messages instead of telegrams, and some awesome adaptations of famous stories. Season 1 is on Netflix, Season 2 should be up around May or later (or at least on TV in the U.S. by that point). Each episode is 1 hr and a half long. Not many Americans know about this series, and they are really missing out. This series is witty, action-packed, and has an awesome plot. I should mention that the Doctor Who creators made this series (Gatiss, Moffat).

Man From Nowhere: Korean revenge film with accurate subtitles. This one was so popular it got onto Hulu as well. It's about a drug deal gone wrong, kidnapping, a Chinese organ-trafficking ring, and there is plenty of blood, gunfighting, intrigue, and awesome cinematography, with an emotional backstory that slowly gets revealed.

A wizard is never late...nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to.

@Mythdracon: All of those sound pretty awesome. I'll add them to my queue and let you know what I think of them.

As for other things I've watched recently [since starting this thread]:

Exit Through the Gift Shop: A documentary on English-based graffiti artist. Well, more accurately it tells the story of Thierry Guetta [Mr. Brainwash].

Home Movies: Sorry...I loved that show back when it was on the air. Glad it was added to Netflix.

No Direction Home: Best Bob Dylan documentary out there. I've watched it easily twenty times.
