More seriously, I figure we could maybe try to request a ceasefire, as it were. Not a "fight nicely request," like my previous announcement of exasperation, but request a complete ceasefire to allow time for things to cool. Unenforced, because we really don't want to be the TLHH Gestapo.

Not a bad idea. Whatever happened to the Member's Lounge where CC members had epic CSG's, told riddles, and ran TPBM game to almost 4000 posts? Even the Pippin-Lurtzy fight was quite amusing. :P I'm getting the feeling that overmoderation is choking the fun out of TLHH. Deleting one-liners/silly posts or strictly insisting that a post stays within tight bounds of its original topic frustrates people. If things get truly out of hand it should be addressed in the thread before rampant edits and deletions. If a member is starting to get edgy, why not send them a friendly PM? Give them a chance to apologize or clarify their comments and you may not need to remove them.

Do we have too many mods? Maybe. But not if they moderate as servants with a light touch. Personally, I don't have time to read everything that goes on here, but the idea is to interfere as little as possible. "Regular" forum members shouldn't really have to care who the mods are as the mod team shouldn't be stepping in all that often.

Maybe we do have too many mods. In my mind, there's no such thing, especially with Kralik getting busier and me about to become so as well. I tend to agree with Kralik: it's not the number of mods that's the problem, it's whether or not they "moderate as servants with a light touch", as he put it. In picking the people I chose as mods, I tried to accomplish several things at once, choosing people that: I personally trusted to do a good job and make smart decisions, I thought were already respected by the rest of the forumers, already had moderated the sections I assigned them to here or that I at least considered "experts" in those respective forums, covered a wide time span to ensure that when other mods/admins were in bed that SOMEONE would likely be poking their heads in from time to time, and/or I thought simply deserved it for their long-standing contributions to the community. Maybe I went a little overboard. But I do NOT think that's the particular issue here.

If anyone wants to step down, then I certainly won't stand in your way. But I don't think that's necessary, and I think I speak for Kralik when I say that we don't intend to ASK anyone to give up their mod status now. People shouldn't have to be axed just because I potentially screwed up. That's not really fair to them. In fact, maybe with my upcoming child birth and sometime-maybe-soon new job, I should be the one to step down and have one or two of the mods backfill as admins? Something to consider. I'm most resposible any mess, after all.... :-k

As for debates and a potential "cease fire", I'll leave that up to you guys. I've tried to stay out of them for the most part, so the decision would probably be better left to people that HAVE been involved and know better than I how high emotions are running. I'm a little more optimistic about its potential to work than Drake is, because I think with the election coming up, there's potential for emotions to run a LOT higher.
Best regards,
Dáin

I understand your feelings, with not wanting to axe anyone, but you and Kralik ARE the Admins, and this is, unfortunately, part of your attributions as such. I, for one, would understand just fine if I were to get axed. As Conor once put it, moderating is about BEING a moderator, not HAVING the mod status. So even if I got axed, I could still step in when arguments arise to try and talk some sense, etc. I just wouldn't have the moderator abilities.
Also, being a moderator is serving as part of the staff, because the staff trusted me to do a job they needed done, and if they happen to don't need it anymore, or they decide they didn't need as many people doing it, I think it's perfectly fine to reduce the number of moderators.
As I said before, I'm not encouraging you to do it, by no means, I'm just easing your burden, should you decide to.

EDIT: I think you need to think this through and, if you decide we DO have too many mods, decide what to do about it. I don't think it's the right way to allow people to volunteer to step down (nor stepping down yourself because of it), as I said earlier, you guys are the Admins, so YOU step US down as needed. ;)

F_M would be the last person to get axed, in my opinion. I think that probably it should be SoP and I stepping down if it comes to that.

Well, Dain and I have discussed it extensively via PM's, and we've both decided to step down and appoint Lurtzy as the new administrator. :uh-huh:

I'd be really frightened if he did notice. The reign of the Dark Lord would begin.
